N.C. State has officially removed Sidney Lowe as its basketball coach, a source told on Tuesday. The school will technically call the move a "resignation," but Lowe was never given the option to return next season, according to a source.

A press conference to announce the decision has been scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.

Lowe never finished better than ninth in the ACC during five seasons at the school. N.C. State had a 5-11 league record each of the past two seasons, and it will now focus on a coaching search its fans hope will deliver a capable candidate who can handle the pressure of working within miles of Duke's Mike Krzyzewski and North Carolina's Roy Williams.

The Wolfpack haven't made the NCAA tournament since Herb Sendek took them to five straight from 2002 to 2006.

Sendek left N.C. State under pressure after the 2006 season.

He now coaches Arizona State.

DBowman... I don't know if Capel would want to come into NCSU & have to go against his mentor twice a year, especially if he might be considered down the line for the Duke job.

gopack - I'll see you next year after the Terps whoop up on your guys again.  Sid had ZERO wins versus Gary in his tenure.  Good recruiter, good guy, horrible bench coach - did you see him twiddling his thumbs the last two minutes of the Terps 87-80 victory? No quick foul strategy, no full court trapping, nada.
A coach will have to be paid a lot to coach under DY.  First St. Louis, then UMD.  Beware the force - it is stronger than you think...
PS - State finished with better in conference record 2 out of the last 20 years in Gary's tenure. Until your guys put up, just put away the smack talk.  You guys haven't done squat for over 25 years.

Why not Paul Hewitt? I know he tapered off at GT, but the guy knows the ACC & he's seen everything K & Williams have to show.
I can't say for sure but I'd be willing to bet that any head coach's contract in one of the major conferences will have clauses that state even if the coach is fired he cannot immediately coach for another team in the conference for X number of years.  Since it happens all the time in the professional ranks of the major sports, I don't think it's a stretch that Hewitt's contract states he can't be a head coach in the ACC for somewhere between two and five years.

Besides, Hewitt's not the answer at NC State is.  They need a young and hungry coach on the rise who can bring fire to the program and a desire to build a dynasty-like program.  I wrote off-the-cuff earlier that Jeff Capel would be worth considering and the more I think about it, I really like it.  I don't know how the Wolfpack alumni would view him, but he's familiar with the conference, he's had a brief show of success in a big conference with Oklahoma, and he's young.  Just a thought...

NC State used to not be the "583" Guy.  That is the problem with the previous coaches.  Hire someone that will bring back R.E.S.P.E.C.T. to the Wolfpack name.  Making it into the NCAA tournament is not enough (Sendek) nor is NOT making it into the tournament (Lowe).  I expect NC State to be a top 16 contender and if any good coaches want to compete with the other UNC and Duke LEGENDS then that will make the ACC THE conference to be in.

as a tarheel fan, Im actually kinda sad to see Sideny Lowe go...   because while i don't think he was coaching well enough to win, i do think he was about as good recruiting wise as NCSU could do... and your never going to beat UNC/Dook with average recruiting classes.  Anyway i hope NCSU fans do get a good coach and do well, its always more fun to crush someone good than someone substandard (stupid word filter, would not let me say what i wanted there) :(

May I recommend our assistant coach, Danny Manning, who knows all about winning national championships and who was a force to be reckoned with in North Carolina high school basketball before coming to Kansas.

Lowe was one of the good guys that ran a clean program. Unfortunately he was in a tough position to compete in recruiting with NC and Duke. He is a DeMatha man, good luck. Gary Williams should be next to go, with his clean program that cant recruit the big name either. Sorry time for him to go too!!!!!!!

Please dont reach to compare Coach Guthridge to any NC State coach.  To suggest he didnt live up to expectations is ridiculous considering he retired after only 3 years with two Final Fours and a ACC championship.  His 34 wins in 97-98 were the most of any first year coach in NCAA history.  The 58 wins he posted after 2 years were also the most by any coach in history. He was national coach of the year in 1998. He accomplished more in 3 years than most coaches ever do.

Here are some positives for the NC State program, since Parrish seems incapable of including anything postive about the Wolfpack program in his last 2 articles regarding their coaching situation

-DraftExpress announces CJ Leslie(2011 All ACC Freshman) will return next year despite the uncertainty of a new coach.
-I'll let your colleage fill in the rest of the bright spots of the NCSU program since he knows how to write an intriguing article that isn't completely one-sided.

You must really love Herb Sendek or hate NCSU, but your biased articles have made me lose a lot of respect for what you have to say about NCAA baskeball.
