Providence has reached an agreement in principle to hire Fairfield's Ed Cooley as its next men's basketball coach, according to the Providence Journal.

The paper reported that Cooley met with his Fairfield team on Tuesday.

CBSSports.com's Jeff Borzello has confirmed the report.

Cooley is a former Rhode Island and Boston College assistant who's been at Fairfield the past five seasons. He won 23 games last year, 25 games this year. The 41-year-old former Rhode Island high school Player of the Year was born in Providence. He's replacing Keno Davis, who was fired after three seasons.

Providence hiring Fairfield's Cooley

I have followed the Friars since the days of Walker,Benedict,Blair,Riordan and Westbrook. This is a bad hire. We will get just more of the same. I don't mean to disrespect Mr. Cooley but he is in over his head. He won't be going up against the likes of Canisius,Niagra and the like. It will be Pitt,Villanova,Syracuse UConn and all the rest of the beasts. It is a great story"Local kid makes good" There are not any Ernie DIGREGORIOS MARVIN BARNES or JOE HASSETTS left in Rhode Island. RI does not have the talent base and when we do get a good talent he transfers to an out of state prep school then goes with Billy Donovan or Rick Pitino. I hope I am wrong but I don't think so. We would have been better if they had signed Jim O'Brien.  Again, the over/under is 3 years and we will be coach hunting again.

Providence hiring Fairfield's Cooley

Hiring Cooley is a great move.  The echo Bigbat's comments, Keno had no discipline within the team.  The team had multiple infractions on and off the campus in the last 2 years and anyone watching this season could see they did not play for him.  Franky, Davis took a program that i felt was seriously crippled by Tim Welsh and made it worse.

At first, I thought the Davis hiring was agressive but impressive for PC to make the move.  Quickly extending him that contract after 1 season was ridiculous!  In the end, Davis was out matched in the Big East.  I wish him luck, but truly feel Cooley will turn this team around.

Holeshot, Keno was not fired because he did not win. He was fired because he lost control of the program. Multiple players leaving or getting kicked off the team. Players being suspened for academic reasons. Oh yeah, the team played some uninsipred loosing basketball. People who talk about not being given enough time have not really followed this program. Those who do know a change had to be made.

I love this pickup of Ed Cooley. He is exactly what this program needs. I am even considering getting season tickets next year in support of the program. The best endorcement is with your wallet, I always say.

Holeshot- Sounds like your bitter towards PC for firing Keno. I disagree and I'm a Drake season ticket holder. Keno's defenses at PC were beyond terrible and that doesn't work in the Big East and the alums and boosters were fed up and threatend to boycott and withhold donations.

Providence hiring Fairfield's Cooley

Grew up with Eddie and PC could not be getting a better guy. He started playin ball in church leagues in Providence and has continued to develop through the ranks, to the point he is now, head coach at PC.  Ed has a defense first mentallity  that has been lacking at PC for years now. My only hope is that he can get this current class of freshman and sophs to buy in and stick around. There is some talent here besides,  Marshon.  Recruiting will be key as with any coach for PC so Ed has his hands full but I wish him all the best and its nice to have some local flavor around here.   GOOD LUCK EDDIE!

Report: Providence hiring Fairfield's Cooley

If I were the athletic director at Providence, I would hire Cooley, sign him to an eight-year contract, and give him three years to field a good team. Oh wait, they just did that with Davis. Give Cooley a chance and some time, maybe you'll be rewarded down the road.
