NEW ORLEANS -- Tennessee contacted Chris Mack this week via Parker Executive Search and told the Xavier coach the school was prepared to offer a deal of nearly $2 million a year for eight years to replace Bruce Pearl, a source close to the SEC program told CBSSports.com on Friday.

Mack rejected the overture, according to the source.

UT's search has since moved on to secondary candidates.

An attempt to reach Mack for comment was not immediately successful.

Tennessee ended its relationship with Pearl last Monday because of recruiting violations that led to a notice of allegations from the NCAA. The school is set to appear before the committee on infractions in June and will likely face further sanctions. That's why Tennessee is willing to give a coach eight years, a source said, because its next coach will almost certainly inherit a decimated roster and face a tough rebuilding job in the SEC East.

Mack has gone 50-17 in two seasons at Xavier.

The Xavier graduate has won Atlantic 10 titles and made the NCAA tournament both years.

Parker Executive Search is an Atlanta-based company that assists schools during coaching searches at a rate of around $75,000. Tennessee and North Carolina State are currently using Parker Executive Search. N.C. State is trying to replace Sidney Lowe. He was fired earlier this month after five seasons.

McLarge:  NC2A was beat by Tark in 1988 and it pissed them off, as well as UNLV Prez Maxson, who hated Tark with a passion:

McHuge - I'm not some UNLV lover, but the "NC2A" as Tark calls it, never got UNLV on serious charges. The SI story on Tark gave detailed accounting on allegations versus facts in the investigation.  Something was going on, but it wasn't as bad as the writers wrote.

I don't mind Memphis but come on man as a Coach you can't tell me he didn't or has not made sure previous players took the test.  Sorry man but Calipari had to know you must take the SAT test to go to college and should have made sure that T was crossed before bringing him to your school.

Oops.  My previous post should have read "technically it wasn't for Cal's recruiting practices."  It was for Derrick Rose forgetting to take the SAT. Wink

Okay time to set straight some of the wrong points on these boards.  First of all UC, UCLA, Ohio State do not count toward the sweet 16 stat because yes the poster was refering to the modern era with a 64 team bracket which didn't happen till the mid 80's.

I believe UCLA went to three straight final fours from 2006-2008.

Finally to the Memphis fan...you did not go to three straight elite eights cause you last one was vacated by the NCAA I believe for cheater Calipari's honest recruiting practices.

Darn, you got me. Smile  Technically it was for Cal's recruiting practices, though.

I agree the Butler accomplishment is probably the most impressive story in basketball outside of the UCLA streak.  I really don't like Butler, but I definitely respect their program and I think Brad Stevens is the second best coach in the game today.  I am not saying this as a whim either.  I think Butler talent wise was probably no better than the 50th best team in the tournament this year.  That guy MAXIMIZES the potential of his players and puts them in the best chance to win every game.  Can we say the Bill Self, Roy Williams, Jamie Dixon and so on can do the same thing?  I think the only coach better than Stevens is Coach K because he doesn't need all the top recruits and one and doners.  He gets multi year guys who he can develop into great players plus he has the track record Stevens does not have.

Oh by the way congrats to Calipari for now getting to his "first" final four.  Lets hope for the sake of UK and the headaches of us all that this one holds up unlike Umass and Memphis.

Irony101:
The Butler story is great. They, too, have a great athletic department. Shoot, Xavier even wooed away Thad Matta from them, and Butler is his alma mater. Butler is actually the second mid-major to do this though. UNLV was the first, making back to back Final Fours in '90 and '91, actually winning the title in '91. The difference is that UNLV was a dirty program, and all evidence says Butler and Xavier are clean. Heck, Xavier seniors always graduate.

McWiki: No prob, bottom line is Xavier's a very good school, and the AD deserves credit. What kills me are these other AD's who fire coach after coach and keep their jobs! They are making the wrong choices, or the institution is dysfunctional.  I think some of these ADs must be kissing serious arse to keep their jobs.  Personally, ADs should be evaluated more closely regarding violations. Once a few occur, especially in non-power sports, they should be shown the door...  But I love the Butler story even more than Xavier - that is another amazing one right before our eyes that has not occurred since the 65 team tourney format - Incredible!

What are you talking about two schools that he has coached at have had final four appearances vacated by the NCAA.  I don't understand where I am wrong about that.  It was one line in a much longer statement.  Call me classless sounds like someone has their panties all in a bunch every time his name is mentioned.  You say he was not proven guilty of anything I say UMASS and Memphis have not been to the final four because their appearances "didn't happen."  You be the judge
