NEW ORLEANS -- Tennessee contacted Chris Mack this week via Parker Executive Search and told the Xavier coach the school was prepared to offer a deal of nearly $2 million a year for eight years to replace Bruce Pearl, a source close to the SEC program told CBSSports.com on Friday.

Mack rejected the overture, according to the source.

UT's search has since moved on to secondary candidates.

An attempt to reach Mack for comment was not immediately successful.

Tennessee ended its relationship with Pearl last Monday because of recruiting violations that led to a notice of allegations from the NCAA. The school is set to appear before the committee on infractions in June and will likely face further sanctions. That's why Tennessee is willing to give a coach eight years, a source said, because its next coach will almost certainly inherit a decimated roster and face a tough rebuilding job in the SEC East.

Mack has gone 50-17 in two seasons at Xavier.

The Xavier graduate has won Atlantic 10 titles and made the NCAA tournament both years.

Parker Executive Search is an Atlanta-based company that assists schools during coaching searches at a rate of around $75,000. Tennessee and North Carolina State are currently using Parker Executive Search. N.C. State is trying to replace Sidney Lowe. He was fired earlier this month after five seasons.

Okay time to set straight some of the wrong points on these boards.  First of all UC, UCLA, Ohio State do not count toward the sweet 16 stat because yes the poster was refering to the modern era with a 64 team bracket which didn't happen till the mid 80's.  Secondly, anyone who calls Xavier a mildly successful program doesn't know their "stick" from a hole in the ground.  To the guy who said try getting past the first round...I am sure three straight sweet 16's the past three years before this was more than what your favorite team did.  Finally to the Memphis fan...you did not go to three straight elite eights cause you last one was vacated by the NCAA I believe for cheater Calipari's honest recruiting practices.

Xavier isn't going to lose Mack to a program who needs to rebuild or a middle of the road major team.  Xavier is a better job than N.C. State, Minnesota, Ole Miss, Texas Tech or programs like this.  Xavier is just a great program that has a foundation of success and a tradition that isn't matched by many.  Yes, they don't have the final fours but like someone said before that door will be broken through sooner rather than later.

McLarge - McBadStatThrower--- Even after the '85 64 team format, more teams have done it than what the poster said - they threw it on the wall and hoped it stuck.. The Terps did 3 in a row from '01-'03...Zona did it '96-'98... that poster had no clue...

Thats funny... Xavier the best program in the country??  what are you smoking?  Get to a Final Four, or better yet fast the first round buddy!

And Butler probably has a thing or two to say about losing coaches, and remaining competitive, if not building more momentum there after.

The next time we let you into Hinkle, we'll be sure to closely monitor your heathen fans and players since they obvioulsy have a thing for breaking things when visiting.

Not sure whats worse than a combo UK - Xaveir fan...

I believe the claim that only 3 teams have ever made 3 consecuive Sweet 16s is incorrect.
