Purdue coach Matt Painter will meet with Missouri officials over the next 48 hours about the school's vacant head coaching position, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

It is believed that Missouri could offer Painter a contract worth more than $2 million annually. Purdue only pays Painter around $1.3 million a year -- though he'll make around $1.9 million this year because of bonuses earned during this 25-win season, according to the Indianapolis Star. Still, Painter's base salary ranks in the bottom half of the Big Ten.

"Matt wants a situation where he will be able to make a run for a national championship," former Purdue coach Gene Keady told CBSSports.com on Monday. "The administration here has to step up and help him."

That said, Keady added this: "I think he'll stay."

Painter has led Purdue to five straight NCAA tournament appearances and two Sweet 16s in six total seasons. Purdue has finished in the top two of the Big Ten in each of the past four seasons.

Missouri is looking for a coach to replace Mike Anderson.

Anderson left for Arkansas last week.

Report: Painter to meet with Missouri officials

This is either a ploy for a pay increase at Purdue, or he follows the cash to Missouri.  Since Painter is a "Purdue Man", I would think he is merely trying to milk more out of his Alma Mater.  And if Purdue doesn't budge, it wouldn't be a shock if he moved on to greener cash pastures.

This seems to merely be a move to try and get some more money out of the well full coffers of Purdue.  Outside of that, why would he leave a strong Big Ten program to go to Missouri unless he is trying to get out of the badly coifed shadow of Keady.

I'm a die-hard Boiler fan, and I don't want to lose Painter.  But realistically, $700k is a nice pay increase, and Missouri is a team on the rise in terms of personnel... while Purdue is about to lose both JuJuan Johnson and E'Twan Moore to graduation (and probably to the NBA).  If Purdue wants to keep him, they'd be wise to offer him a raise very soon.

Difference between Painter and Crean is that Crean had a track record and Painter did not.  Painter was eased into a healthy situaiton at Purdue and Crean took over a devestated IU program.  Painter has gone to the tournament, that's really nice.  Crean elevated Marquette to a similar level and threw in a final four appearance.  In closing, Crean is getting paid more because he has done more and has a more established track record.  That said, what has Painter really done with his superior talent?  Enjoy your visits to the tournament, the occasional trip to the sweet 16, and the black and gold kool-aid that you must be drinking.

Report: Painter to meet with Missouri officials

Guys, it doesnt matter where he played high school or college basketball, hes not turning down a 700k raise to go to a school that has just as good a chance of being successful as purdue does. plain and simple

Tom Crean makes more than him because Crean is at Indiana and Indiana is just as big as UK when it comes to basketball. Before you say Crean has done nothing, look at his recruiting classes for the next couple of years. they are going to be a force in the coming years

You wouldn't make a lateral move for a $700,000-$1mil raise...?  lmao...keep talking...

I would find it difficult to believe that Painter would take a step down to Missouri (lateral move at best). Although it is well known the boosters and alumni love Coach Painter, he doesn't have a great relationship with AD Morgan Burke. I would have to re-visit my Boiler status if he would head to Missouri. It would tell me Purdue isn't committed to winning championships and is content with its Sweet 16 calibur program. I couldn't blame him if he did leave. Hell, Tom Crean makes more money than Painter and he hasn't done anything!!

Would have to scratch my head on this one.  He played high school ball in Indiana and played college ball at Purdue so you would think this would be the job he's always wanted.  Is there something else that's going on here or is he just using Missouri to get more money out of Purdue.  Any thoughts?

It looks like Purdue is going to lose a good coach by paying him under market value for too long and thinking they could continue to get away with doing it.
