Purdue coach Matt Painter will meet with Missouri officials over the next 48 hours about the school's vacant head coaching position, according to a report in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

It is believed that Missouri could offer Painter a contract worth more than $2 million annually. Purdue only pays Painter around $1.3 million a year -- though he'll make around $1.9 million this year because of bonuses earned during this 25-win season, according to the Indianapolis Star. Still, Painter's base salary ranks in the bottom half of the Big Ten.

"Matt wants a situation where he will be able to make a run for a national championship," former Purdue coach Gene Keady told CBSSports.com on Monday. "The administration here has to step up and help him."

That said, Keady added this: "I think he'll stay."

Painter has led Purdue to five straight NCAA tournament appearances and two Sweet 16s in six total seasons. Purdue has finished in the top two of the Big Ten in each of the past four seasons.

Missouri is looking for a coach to replace Mike Anderson.

Anderson left for Arkansas last week.

totally agreed indiana gets picked over by many strong competing schools (kentucky and ohio state have also done some damage there in recent years), but its not a new dynamic.  missouri has recruited on an island for awhile, and they really haven't finished at the top of the big 12 under anderson.  maybe they could under painter, but i hope we don't find that out.

Stlcardsfan does bring up a good point about how much less competition there would be in recruiting at Missouri. Purdue has to compete with Indiana and Notre Dame. And now that Butler has made the Final Four two years in a row I'm sure that will create a new recruiting challenge.

Sorry...i know your a purdue fan and all but Missouri is a far better program...you had Keady, we had Norm Stewart...that is a wash at best fro you.  Missouris facilities are far superior, the Big XII is way better than the BigX and Missouri has less in state competition for recruits, with only SLU and Missouri St, both far inferior programs to Mizzou.  He may just be posturing to get the raise at Purdue, but dont kid yourselves, Mizzou is a better program

Don't be sorry or kid yourself, I believe Purdue is the better program.  Big 12 better than Big 10?  Again, I will take the Big 10

can certainly disagree on both programs merits (still think purdue gets the edge).  however, to suggest that the big12 is better is a joke.  missouri's governor and university president lobbied to join the big10, and in the process ripped some of their big12 members.  they wanted out, but the big10 said no dice.

Simple, Dwayne Wade fell into Crean's lap because coming out of high school, Wade didn't have the academics to get into some other "major" schools at the time, mainly B10 school Illinois!!!  Tom Crean does nothing but clap his way into recruits hearts.  How did this sophomore class do this last year?  They were ranked in the top 15 maybe even top 10 coming out of high school and they finished worst then the year before when they were all freshman!!!

Burke and Purdue Athletics better do the right thing and give him what he wants which is a fair market price for not only him, but his Assistants!!!!

Both Mizzou and Purdue have their pros and cons. Both are football programs in football conferences. If going from Purdue to Mizzou or vice versa in basketball isnt a lateral move nothing is

this makes no sense to me.  you are a great basketball school. you have the support of everybody there. its your alma mater.  yes purdue loses two of its best players but gets one back due to injury. and if he leaves he will have to start over. seriously 1.3 million compared to 2 million is not enough money to live on???  its not that big of money gain.
i dont understand it. missouri is in a conf that could fall apart at any given moment and purdue is in one of the two most stable conferences there is.
this is stupid on painters part.

Dbowman,

Nice post, not sure that Crean would lose his job if not .500 better, but you did do a good job of summarizing where both Crean and Painter are at on building their programs and what both have had to overcome.
