Jim Burr, the controversial referee who has worked 16 Final Fours and seven national title games, will not work Saturday's national semifinals or Monday's national title game in Houston, a source told on Tuesday.

A source said the 10 preselected officials with Final Four assignments are:
  • John Cahill
  • Pat Driscoll
  • Verne Harris
  • John Higgins
  • Les Jones
  • Jamie Luckie
  • Antinio Petty
  • Doug Shows
  • Michael Stephens
  • Mark Whitehead
Burr has been criticized in recent weeks for the way he handled the end of the St. John's-Rutgers game during the Big East tournament, and for a questionable non-call in Arizona's win over Memphis in the Round of 64 of the NCAA tournament. Burr's last game was Arizona's win over Texas in the Round of 32.

The problem with officiating - especially at tournament time - is that you normally see the SAME guys calling games from the Sweet 16 round through the Final 4. It's absurd. And it has typically been Tim Higgins, Jim Burr, Ed Hightower, Karl Hess, Tony Greene, Curtis Shaw.....those guys. It's time to move on. Far too often, they like to insert themselves into the game as if they're a part of the action. They're NOT. They are simply there to enforce the rules and ensure that the kids are safe.

Another thing that has troubled me is "familiarity". You always have officials who've called a number of games for a certain team also working that team's game in the tournament. That should NEVER happen. I suspect that one of the reasons you don't see Karl Hess on the list for the Final 4 is because Duke is no longer in the tournament. If they were still in it, I'd bet my house, car and bank account that he'd be on the list. He's one of the officials who's part of the "Vanguard of the Legacy", as some of us call 'em.

I don't know how in the world John Cahill is on this list. He's a good ref, but when he's wrong on calls, it's usually obvious and one of those real head-scratchers. My hope is that he's simply an alternate this weekend; same goes for Jamie Luckie (Karl Hess' sidekick).

Of all the names listed here, i'd say that John Higgins and Michael Stephens are, by far, the best. They've been consistently good and, more importantly, consistently fair and impartial. I hope they're working Monday night's championship game.

Im with you, every TV game they assign this guy and a few others like  their God's gift to officiating and they're totally East Coast bias when they make their calls. And old and too slow to get in position. Im sick of it too. There cant be that much of a shortage in officials. Just goes to show the the old and out of date are still running the show and need to retire watch from their cabin porch.

It's time for this man to hang it up.  Way too many costly mistakes.  Please take Tim Higgens with you.  It's unbelievabe how many games these two guys officiate every year.  They take over the game and half the time are out of position to make the proper call.

As a Memphis fan, I found myself hating Jim Burr after our loss to Zona.

Then I realized that Rutgers fans felt no sympathy for least he called (although poorly) our ENTIRE game, rather than just choosing to not finish the game.

I don't know the man and won't comment on him personally, but as a college basketball official, he is a disgrace.  He has no business calling games at all, much less the Final Four.
