UNLV's Lon Kruger will be named Oklahoma's next men's basketball coach, according to the Oklahoman.

The newspaper reported Friday afternoon that Kruger and OU have agreed in principle on a contract worth more than $2 million annually after running a headline Thursday night that read "Scratch off Bruce Weber, Lon Kruger as OU candidates." Reached by phone, Kruger told CBSSports.com that he had not yet seen the report. When told what it said, he declined comment.

Kruger, 58, has taken UNLV to four NCAA tournaments in seven seasons.

He is a native of Kansas.

Oklahoma fired Jeff Capel last month.

Report: Kruger to be next OU coach

Kruger did a good job at Illinois, our program was sliding in Lou Hensons last years and he built a good foundation for when Self took over.  I just wish OU would have taken Webber off our hands because he is a complete moron.  So if it came down to Webber or Kruger, OU made the right choice.

UNLV was on a bit of a down-turn, and this will only make the decline worse.

Ok, if you don' t know what goes on here in Vegas or you don't follow basketball kindly move on moron.
Kruger has been good for UNLV, a good solid 7 years. He took his teams to 4 NCAA's out of his 7 years which is not too bad considering where they were when he took over.

But throwing 2 million at you, you just can't pass that up UNLV doesn't have that kind of money.

Report: Kruger to be next OU coach

Awkwardness of coaching against KSU! Are you kidding me! That was over 20 years ago. He is coming out of the cold of the whatever conference UNLV belongs to, and stepping way up to the Big 12. No brainer! No one should be surprised. OU can and should be a good job if you work it right. There is plenty of talent in Oklahoma, plenty of exposure in the Big 12.
Kruger has been at this for awhile now and has tons of contacts. Why not come back to the Big8/12 that he knows the best?

Report: Kruger to be next OU coach

If coaching against a former employer or team was ackward, college coaching would be a real mess or more than what it is. He is going to a bigger, better conference instead of the relatively obscure one he is in. UNLV is not a very relevant program and he seems to not get a lot of help from the administration there. He was a good recruiter in the past at Illinois and Florida. Don't see any reason for him not to be able to succed at OU. He will need a couple of years to clean up that mess though.

mediocre

Kruger's never won anything big---they are wasting their money thinking he's going to do anything at OU.  OK should have gotten a bigger name for that much bling.

So  OU plays in a real conference, and is offering 2 million a year to coach.  Last time I checked, UNLV plays on the Mountain, and probably doesnt offer 2 mil a year.  I fail to see any logic in your random lame statement.

Not to mention I believe BYU is leaving the conference, and possibly another team.  I'm sure you will try to make a bad rebuttal, but if you put it to a vote, probably 90 - 95 % of the people would choose  OU over UNLV.

Report: Kruger to be next OU coach

I'm surprised Lon Kruger would take the Oklahoma job. Surely he realizes he'll have to coach against Kansas State, his alma mater, the school he coached to the 1988 Elite Eight. Does he really want the awkwardness of coaching against KSU
I think that $2million a year will probably help him get over the guilt pretty quick.........

I'm also surprised that there aren't any K-State fans on this message board making their feelings known about this report.

Maybe this is just an April Fools' joke.

Report: Kruger to be next OU coach

So yeah i'm a sooner fan.  I was driving at work today when I first heard this news and anyone who saw me driving in the work blazer probably thought i was insane.  I was pumping my fist saying "Yes!!!!".  I feel for UNLV cause i loved the teams Tark had back in the day and would love to see them return to the forefront of college b'ball but to get Kruger here at OU is awesome for us.

The sooners right now are in complete shambles.  Kruger is gonna have to come in here and basically start from scratch.  I just hope the school and fans give him the backing he needs early.  He's a good coach and it's just gonna take some time to turn things around here.  I love the choice of him as our coach though.  Hopefully he can pull us out of the black hole that started to form when the Griffen brothers left.
