Smart rejects N.C. State, staying at VCU

HOUSTON -- Shaka Smart agreed to a new and extended contract with VCU on Monday after rejecting a multiyear offer from North Carolina State, multiple sources have told CBSSports.com.

The news was first reported by CBSSports.com's Gregg Doyel.

"[N.C. State] talked to [Smart] and made an offer," VCU athletic director Norwood Teague told the Charlotte Observer after Doyel's initial report. "We countered and he is staying."

Smart, 33, led VCU to its first Final Four this season.

The Rams lost to Butler here in Houston on Saturday night.

N.C. State is searching for a replacement for Sidney Lowe. Sources have told CBSSports.com that the school has seriously pursued many candidates already -- among them Texas' Rick Barnes, Arizona's Sean Miller, UCLA's Ben Howland, Xavier's Chris Mack, Memphis' Josh Pastner and Texas A&M's Mark Turgeon. All have decided to pass on the opportunity to work under athletic director Debbie Yow, whose reputation within the coaching community is hindering her ability to find a marquee coach.

I agree with everyone below... simple solution- debbie yow is the problem... This goes further back than her days at Maryland. I have worked with a few players who have played under her and many things are not nice about her....

The problem State is having in landing a new coach has nothing to do with the status of the program or school. NC State, as well as the ACC , has/have plenty of basketball cache. Ordinarilly candidates of Shaka Smart's type would be lining up to take the position, but these are not ordinary times at ol' State. Their new A.D., Debbie Yow, is the reason for all the rejections. She's the former A.D. of Maryland who tried to railroad Gary Williams, a coach who has brought his alma-mater a National Championship as well as another Final Four visit. What coach, who currently has a gaurenteed contract at a school which is competitive, would risk that to sign on with State. Yow is genuinely disliked by most of the Division I coaches for having tried to run Williams out of a job  though he"s won big and in an upstanding manner. No clouds hanging over his head ala Calhoun, Calipari, Pearl, et al. Don't think for a minute that coaches don't talk to one another. Yeah, your problem, NC Staters, is that woman doing the hiring, Yow.

my viewpoint is that state should try to go after a more experienced coach that know the game very well and knows how to make the right coaching descisons at the right times on and off the court  and that can actually be more succesful against rival teams and have the non conference schedule more diffcult so it can prepare the players more for the acc season

Two things:  Rick Barnes already showed he can't coach in the ACC, so why pursue him? There's evidence enough of Yow's questionable judgement.  Secondly, you BIg East proponents need to remove your heads from each other's rectums and join the rest of the world.  Just because one of your teams was crowned champion doesn't make the Big East the best conference.  It was a crappy game and neither team belonged in the championship.  Certainly seven sub-par teams from an overrated conference did not belong in the tournament.  You guys are just senseless.

Let me rephrase that for you. NC STATE Fans are a bunch of cry babys.  The other fans have nothing to be crying about.

You must be living on Fantasy Island, I have been a Wolfpack supporter since 89' and I can say that 83 was a fluke and there hasnt been a "program" since Jimmy V. NC State fans are the most unrealistic lunatics I have ever seen. When you look at the players from this area the banners all hang in Chapel Hill and Durham. Just because they won a couple of championships 30 and 40 YEARS AGO, doesnt make them a "program" I seriously doubt that NC State will ever win again in basketball. If anyone has a sane, logical explanation as to why this would be a good job, let them speak.

ACC is the cream of the crop? Maybe 5-10 years ago. The Big East is hands down the best conference in the country right now.
