Former Alabama coach Mark Gottfried has reached a deal in principle to become North Carolina State's next head coach, school officials confirmed Tuesday.

Gottfried coached Alabama for 11 seasons before he was fired in 2009.

He made five NCAA tournaments.

N.C. State spent weeks searching for Sidney Lowe's replacement before settling on Gottfried. Sources told CBSSports.com that the school pursued many candidates -- among them Texas' Rick Barnes, Arizona's Sean Miller, UCLA's Ben Howland, Xavier's Chris Mack, Memphis' Josh Pastner, Texas A&M's Mark Turgeon, Cincinnati's Mick Cronin and Wichita State's Gregg Marshall. All decided to pass on the opportunity to work under athletic director Debbie Yow, whose reputation within the coaching community hindered her ability to make the type of home run hire she and her fan base desired.

Wow, why not just interview every current coach everywhere.  Seriously, though, why would ANY of these names consider taking the State job?  Except for the last two where AT BEST this would be a lateral move, for everyone else it would represent a demotion, and in most cases, big ones.

1) Is mark Gottfried the coach that can compete against UNC/Duke for recruits?
-is there a state fan out there that actually believes and thinks yes!?  are you delusional too?

Sidney Lowe was competing quite well in recruiting against UNC/Duke, so I don't see why this guy can't.  State got a top10 class last year.  How is that delusional?  Fact is, UNC and Duke get the majority of their best talent from out of state anyway.  You're a UNC fan, you should know this already and not need it explained.  State doesn't need Harrison Barnes, Kyrie Irving, or Brandon Knight to become a very competitive team.  How many top10 recruits played in the national championship game?  But the fact is, JJ Hickson, CJ Leslie, and Ryan Harrow were all top20 recruits.

Dilbert Gottfried?

If no decent coach wants to work for her, then Debbie Yow must be a real bee-atch!

From a BAMA fan I hope CMG does a good job. He lost the fire at Alabama but he also had some great wins. The people in Alabama like this guy but his product got old and under coached. A change of venues may be what he needs. He may do well and I'm pulling for him to do so.

Debbie Yow hires Gottfried

Retread hire-Retread hire-Retread hire !!!
Seriously, that's the best Debbie Yow could do? WOW!
NC State will continue to be mediocre at best until both are fired, 4 years from now ...

OK as a UNC fan... state fans should take this with a obvious grain of light blue salt..  but I hate to say this.

1) Is mark Gottfried the coach that can compete against UNC/Duke for recruits?
-is there a state fan out there that actually believes and thinks yes!?  are you delusional too?
      - so imho your looking at a second tier recruiter at best, but if he hires several "aau" coaches of the right players he can definately pick up a couple of blue chippers.. its legal and I would do it if i was a new head coach without a established staff for 2+ years.

2)Is M. Gottfried the coach that can get NCSU back to the NCAA's?
     - possibly, but what kind of seed are we talking here?
-if you dont have the elite talent, its very hard to get a top 4 seed.. if your happy with 5-10th seed and maybe making the occasional sweet sixteen/elite 8 like Fla st did this year, well then he could be your man.
-Even the year he had alabama with a number 1 ranking, he just made the sweet 16.. it was a year later with a 8 seed that he made the elite 8..  and thats kinda it, after that he just started losing.

;- So his track record is not amazing, he is not a up and comming young coach that is hot off a great year like Brad stevens or S. Smart.. and he definately has not even had their sucess.

I guess my major point is, i think this is a safe hire, that might bring some respectablity to the program.. but as a UNC fan, MG does not scare me.  I just don't see how he's going to do anything other than every 3 years or so come up third in the conference then slide back down to 5-7th at best..  And thats giving him the benifit of the doubt.  I definately could be seeing things in a light blue lense, but MG could not compete with UK in the SEC over his career, so how is he going to compete with UNC/Duke?  Let alone do it in the next 2-3 years..

How pathetic. They hired the ex-Alabama coach that was recently fired for being terrible. I've seen this guy on "The Experts" and he's not impressive at all. For months we've been hearing that NC State was about to make "a big hire" and they hire this chump? What a joke.

I'm not sure that Gottfried is a big enough name to compete with Krzyzewski and Williams in the recruiting arena.  NC State needed a really big name.  Sort of like Calipari.  Well, without all the NCAA violations, of course.
