N.C. State hires Gottfried

Former Alabama coach Mark Gottfried has reached a deal in principle to become North Carolina State's next head coach, school officials confirmed Tuesday.

Gottfried coached Alabama for 11 seasons before he was fired in 2009.

He made five NCAA tournaments.

N.C. State spent weeks searching for Sidney Lowe's replacement before settling on Gottfried. Sources told that the school pursued many candidates -- among them Texas' Rick Barnes, Arizona's Sean Miller, UCLA's Ben Howland, Xavier's Chris Mack, Memphis' Josh Pastner, Texas A&M's Mark Turgeon, Cincinnati's Mick Cronin and Wichita State's Gregg Marshall. All decided to pass on the opportunity to work under athletic director Debbie Yow, whose reputation within the coaching community hindered her ability to make the type of home run hire she and her fan base desired.

N.C. State hires Gottfried

Mark Gottfried, formerly of Alabama, as the next head men's basketball coach. "I am extremely excited about this opportunity and challenge," said Gottfried. "I have always had great respect for the tradition of excellence here at State and I look forward to helping build this basketball program into a national contender."

Trip - I hate to defend Parrish (he doesn't need it), but it seems his opinion is indeed fact.  Yow said as much at the press conference.  This is not verbatim, but it's close --- Debbie Yow: Let's be really clear - there's only one person that is saying that (that Debbie was difficult to work with), and that is Gary Williams.  He is doing his best to sabotage this hiring process.
I'm sure Gary was mad about being held accountable.  Yow tried to get Gary out the door.  She failed ultimately and I imagine he'll do what he can to sabotage her. And the Fridge is gone along with Yow's coach in waiting to the tune of $4M+ additional cost to the university.  Fridge was a solid coach, but it was time to move on from him.  Unfortunately, the current AD and president fouled that process up.

72-88 Ring a bell? 38-52 Ring a bell? Those are Sendek's ACC and Pac10 records. You are what your record says you are, and Sendek aint that good.

I live in Maryland. It was no secret that Debbie could not get along with Gary Williams or Ralph Friedgen. I was surprised how happy the NC State faithful was to have her leading their program. I think they have a great football coach in Tom Obrien. With a top 10 recruiting class in place I was dissapointed that they were kicking Lowe to the curb especially since he led them to a National Championship.  Valvano had success until his death but the program has not been even close to what it used to be. Given some additional time I think Lowe would have been the best guy to turn this around.

The State fans thought this was a great job and people would be lining up to take it. Now we see nobody wanted it. The ACC has morphed into a 2 team league and you wll have an odd 3rd team that will put together a nice season. The bottom line is nobody wants to step into a situation where you are playing for 3rd place. Since Gary Williams is well respected among those in the coaching fraternity Im sure he had something to say about the way he was treated by Yow to his fellow coaches. I think in due time the State fans will come to understand that Debbie Yow is more of a liability than an asset when it comes to her relationships with those in the coaching profession. You have a position in the heart of ACC country and a program willing to open the checkbook and we have no takers if this doesnt send up a red flag nothing will.

N.C. State hires Gottfried

If I was an NC State fan I would be pissed.  Gottfried is a great recruiter, but a terrible coach.  And his wife is crazy (almost came to blows with Paul Finebaum in the stands).

At least Missouri's hire made some sense. Wow. N.C. State has definitely proven Missouri was the better job.
Huh?  Do you even watch college basketball?  How is Frank Haith a better hire than Gottfried?  They are one in the same in my opinion except for the fact that Gottfried has a much better track record.

Really?  Frank Haith?  That's a joke right?  Gottfried has demonstrated some success, with two different teams, neither of which were programs that were easy to succeed in basketball.  Haith has demonstated......that he can lead a team to the NIT 4 times in 7 years?  Well, you did say Missouri has low standards, so I guess I see why that hire "made some sense".

I'm slamming Parrish for printing rumors from "sources" and not balancing them with fact. For example, the FACT is he resigned. Perhaps it was a Sidney Lowe type of resignation, but he was not fired. I'm not saying that DY wasn't liked by her coaches, but opinions are being reported as fact. THAT is why I have a problem with Parrish (besides the fact that he sucks on a regular basis).

Why did NCSU have such a tough time finding a coach when Fowler hired Lowe? Was it for any of the reasons you mentioned? It seems there are a lot of ways a coaching search can go awry.

CD, when you're responding to a response of an article posted on, you are allowed to throw your opinion of Debbie Yow out there as fact. If Parrish chooses to write the way you do, then I don't consider him a journalist, just another guy with an opinion. He doesn't deserve a job at CBS, he just needs a twitter page.

Gary Williams got pissed because she held him accountable for for mediocre seasons and low graduation rates, and Friedgen hasn't won in the double digits since he lost the team he inherited from Vanderlinden. That's MY opinion. Give me a job, CBS.

Trip - I realize you're a NC State fan, but your slamming Parrish for reporting that the coaching community might not want to work for Yow makes me wonder if you know much about anything at all. Why do you think it was soooooo hard to find a replacement for the coach who you, yourself wanted fired for some time now? Was it because NCSU is such a poor program? Was it because NCSU doesn't have much of a reputation for being a winning program? Why do you feel Yow hired a former SEC coach that was fired from his school a couple of years ago? Most of these questions are rhetorical too.
