Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

Duke freshman Kyrie Irving will enter the NBA Draft and forgo his final three years of college, coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Wednesday.

"Our whole program is overjoyed with having Kyrie here for one year and that he has the chance now to pursue a dream of being a high draft pick and a great player in the NBA,” Krzyzewski said. “We are totally supportive of Kyrie, his family and his decision. We look forward to continuing to work with him during the upcoming months leading to his entry into the NBA and afterwards while he is an NBA player.  He is a great young man, a terrific student, and a truly amazing representative for our program and for Duke.  We love him and are very happy for him and his family.”

Irving averaged 17.5 points and 4.3 assists per game this season.

The point guard only appeared in 11 games because of an injured toe.

He's projected by some to be the No. 1 overall pick in June's NBA Draft.

Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

Bravo wesman!  Your point was well delivered and very well received.  After hearing that 2 of 3 of my heels were coming back I was thrilled.  Of course I was thrilled because I'm a UNC fan but anyone that can pass up guaranteed million$ to stay in school should also be commended.
Thanks for the comment!

How good does your program have to be when you shrug off your best player who only played eleven games going to the draft.Coack K won without him and won the acc title. They came up short in the ncaa turn but how big is Duke? They are so big were the loss of a #1 pick has little or no effect of the next season

The NCAA is a joke and its broke. These college programs need to be shall we say punished when they continue to bring in these one and done recruits. Take for instance Kentucky. Last year they had 4 freshman and a junior go in the first round of the NBA draft. Ok. So what did they do, they brought in 4 more possible one and dones. Next year they have 4 of the top 19 high school recruits signed. All theyre doing is trying to buy a National Championship. One problem tho....their coach sucks. Now the NCAA needs to fix this problem. What they need to do is when a school gives an athlete a 4 year scholarship, that scholarship is to be tied up for the 4 years regardless if the player is still with the program or not. Lets remember people, these are colleges, you know, a place for higher learning. Kudos to the BUTLERS and VCUs, hell even coaches like Gary Williams of Maryland who refuses to bring in those so called one and done. Even the great coach K gave in this past year and brought in Irving who was clearly gonna be a one and done. The NCAA needs to wake up and fix this. But they wont because its all about the money

Slim pickings this year. He will be the great Duke NBA player like all the rest have turned out to be. Coach K really knows how to get them ready for the big leagues. You know ummm them great Duke NBA players like.... Ummmm Grant Hill?????? JJ ????? Oh he will be a good support cast member of a ok team and maybe help them win a few. Since the ACC and Duke basketball is nothing like NBA ball.

It has to be incredibly hard to play high school basketball, a few games in college, and then make the jump to the NBA.  Granted, some people like LeBron/Kobe/Dwight didn't need college, and Carmelo only played one year, but do you really think Irving is that kind of player?  From what I saw from him he was a great talent, but I'm not sure he has the physical traits needed to only play 15 or so games in college and then be successful in the pros.

Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

all this sad news for Duke fans and all this great news for the Tarheels...at the end of the day...Duke will be just fine!  When you have the winningest coach(almost) in NCAA history leading a team that continues to be the envy of the rest of the college basketball world, it's not a worry from year to year...reload and move on...life will be just fine...next year Duke has the #1 rated high school player in the nation coming to play, Austin Rivers, and two other McDonalds All Americans...aside from Austin Rivers they are also getting Quinn Cook and Marshall Plumlee...Cook is a true point guard(like Irving) and Marshall Plumlee, at 7'0", is the most athletic of the (3) Plumlees and won the High School slam dunk championship this year...while all the Tarheel fans feel they are the team to beat(and I won't disount that)...NEVER count out the Duke Blue Devils....the most successful team in college basketball since K came to Durham

So its Kyrie Irving fault that Arizona was a very athletic team; that was playing above the rim, out running, and out playing duke. If Kyrie Irving didnt play against Arizona duke might have lost by 40. He was the reason you all were underfeated in the beggining of the season.

With this season now over and Duke being without Kyrie Irving for most of it, it sucks that he is going to forgo the last 3 years of college for the NBA.  With the players that Duke will put on the Court next season and if they were to have a healthy Kyrie, they would be a lock to be preseason favorite to win it all.  I believe he is worthy of the NBA however i do believe he could use another year under Coach K..

He's making a mistake ! he only played a handful of games so it was tough to gauge how he progressed ! One more year would have helped him I think ! I wish these kids would look at the myriad of guys who didn't make an NBA roster after leaving school !
