Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

Posted on: April 6, 2011 4:54 pm

Duke freshman Kyrie Irving will enter the NBA Draft and forgo his final three years of college, coach Mike Krzyzewski announced Wednesday.

"Our whole program is overjoyed with having Kyrie here for one year and that he has the chance now to pursue a dream of being a high draft pick and a great player in the NBA,” Krzyzewski said. “We are totally supportive of Kyrie, his family and his decision. We look forward to continuing to work with him during the upcoming months leading to his entry into the NBA and afterwards while he is an NBA player.  He is a great young man, a terrific student, and a truly amazing representative for our program and for Duke.  We love him and are very happy for him and his family.”

Irving averaged 17.5 points and 4.3 assists per game this season.

The point guard only appeared in 11 games because of an injured toe.

He's projected by some to be the No. 1 overall pick in June's NBA Draft.

Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

Of course he is going to the NBA. Him and the Plumblees do not make a Final Four team. I think he sunk the Blue Devils this year by taking the ball out of their best players hands. That and Williams played like a lottery pick.

Once again it's LUCK that helps the tar holes...when lucks not involved the go NIT
Considering the reputation of this poster, I won't comment on it.

I will say that KI is a special talent that will be fantastic in the NBA.   However, as a Tarheel fan, it's nice to see the REALLY GOOD Duke players leave early!
Good Luck to KI!!

Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

Duke only lost 5 games and one of those was with Irving so they had a good year no matter but he is injury prone so I won't fault him for leaving.
Since when is one episode a trend?  Greg Oden and Yao Ming are injury prone-- Kyrie Irving is not.

While I don't like him as a Duke player, he seemed to be a likeable guy.  He didn't sulk on the bench (that I'm aware of) and he gave pointers to Nolan Smith who was thrust into the point guard spot.  What more could you ask for from a player who cannot play for most of a season?

Good luck in the NBA.  And I genuinely mean that.

Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

once again it's LUCK that helps the tar holes...when lucks not involved the go NIT
...Yeah luck won the '05 and '09 titles..3 final 4s in the past 7 seasons..

UNC loses more guys early to the NBA than any other team. Period. Duke hardly EVER loses guys early. Everyone knows, when talking about 'luck', who truly has that golden horseshoe up its ass...Duke...With or without Irving UNC still was the team to beat in the ACC next year. Idiot. Im sure 'luck' was also why UNC was first in the ACC Standings this year, too...right??..Keep talking idiot.

..And talking about the NIT year, I would say a team whose best player(Ed Davis) was hurt most of the year, and had horrible backcourt play (HMM..I wish Lawson and Ellington CAME BACK to school off that title like...hmm...Smith and Singler), I would say the year could have been worse...especially when you consider it was UNC's worst ever possibly.

Duke finally loses a key player early and they're acting like they're so unlucky. Irving coming back to school doesnt change the fact that Duke is one of the weakest teams in the country up front. Their 'bigs' are soft, cant score, and are generally good for 2 airballs a game from 3 feet away from the bucket...and oh yeah they get posterized by guards for days. Their soft frontcourt was exposed in a pretty ugly and spectacular way by Arizona..I mean, that was a dunk fest AZ put on.Duke has plenty of guards..4/5 star recruits all of them..thats a poor excuse already by dUKE FANS..But im glad you can tell they already know UNC is taking the ACC next year...just like this year.

Irving entering NBA Draft after one season

So, Irving pops in, plays 8 games, gets injured, comes back for 3 games after missing three months and pretty much takes the team totally out of rhythm...and then he says goodbye.  Wow, Kyrie, thanks for nothing kid.  Duke only lost 5 games and one of those was with Irving so they had a good year no matter but he is injury prone so I won't fault him for leaving.  I just wish Krzyzewski would have kept him on the bench and allowed the Duke team to play as they had for the previous three months.

He seems like a great kid, and he's certainly got some incredibe skills on the court. I just hate it in situations like this because the selfish fan in me was looking for to seeing a few years of awesome competition between Irving and Kendall Marshall. Good luck to him, though. He worked hard and he deserves it.
