Larry Brown is interested in becoming UNLV's next coach and has even had conversations with UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood, SI.com reported Saturday. But the school has already announced the four finalists for the job are BYU assistant Dave Rice, former New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus, former Oregon coach Ernie Kent and St. John's assistant Mike Dunlap, meaning there's no indication Brown is being seriously considered.

"The list has been narrowed down to four outstanding candidates and I am looking forward to continuing the interview process," Livengood said in a statement. "We are looking forward to naming our new head coach very soon."

Rice and Theus, both of whom are former UNLV players, are considered the leading candidates.

UNLV is expected to hire one of them on Sunday or Monday.

Brown, 70, was fired by the Bobcats in December.

He hasn't coached college basketball since leading Kansas to the national title in 1988.

My money is on Theus, he's proven himself and on top of all that he's a UNLV alum, GREAT way to introduce a new era in rebel hoops.

All these slams by a bunch of armchair coaches who likely never even played high school basketball.  For the clown who referred to him as "that old Lew", "that old Jew" has accomplished 100 times more than you or you wouldn't be sitting in front of your computer making caustic remarks.  As long as he's in good health, with his knowledge of basketball, he'd make someone a good college coach for some time.  Who knows, he could coach to eighty.

Seriously the guy is a great coach and he is in great shape so if he is serious he should continue coaching, but this is not the right job for him. this job really should be Theus' to lose. What Larry should do is find a good mid major like Manhattan, St Louis or Missouri St, or a team in a big conference that never wins like NC State or Miami, or Rutgers and go there and turn the program into a power. That is all that is left for him to accomplish. I would love to see it. He could take the Miami Hurricanes job and instantly get a few big name recruits who know he could groom them into NBA players, AND live in Boca! With Pat Riley already with the Heat, Miami could become the basketball hot bed of the country.

Speaking of that, I always wondered why more players haven't returned to their roots when becoming FA and gone to play for the Carolina franchise, Hornets or Bobcats. Especially with Jordan down there now you would think at least a few Duke/UNC/NCST/WF players would want to go back there.

Report: Brown interested in coaching UNLV

Larry Brown is interested in coaching anywhere in the USA. Coaching is like oxygen for him: he can't live without it.

Theus makes the most sense in that he was a great UNLV player during the glory years of theTark era, has had previous success as a head coach at New Mexico State, and knows the culture in Vegas.

All of these intangibles will surely energize their fan base and allow the Runnin Rebels to continue the success the program achieved under Kruger, who totally rebuilt UNLV basketball not only from a wins and losses aspect, but also cleaned up the image of the school from a public relations standpoint.

He needs to just go play bingo with the other old timers. I respect Larry Brown but he is not right for UNLV at this point in his career. I think an AD should at least talk to him, he has a ton of knowledge, the problem would be if he can remember it. His credentials are better than the other coaches up for the job, they should be he has been coaching for 50 freaking years.

Larry Brown could not be around for the long term.  I like the idea, but NOO!  Theus is the guy, he is Vegas, our player, an NBA player who could recruit for us and keep who we have.  I like Theus!!!

Larry Brown was the most successful head coach in LA Clipper history
Isn't that a bit like being the fastest snail?
It is more like being the leper with the most toes.  I am not sure successful and Clippers belong in the same sentence.  How many more years until Griffin can escape?
