Larry Brown is interested in becoming UNLV's next coach and has even had conversations with UNLV athletic director Jim Livengood, SI.com reported Saturday. But the school has already announced the four finalists for the job are BYU assistant Dave Rice, former New Mexico State coach Reggie Theus, former Oregon coach Ernie Kent and St. John's assistant Mike Dunlap, meaning there's no indication Brown is being seriously considered.

"The list has been narrowed down to four outstanding candidates and I am looking forward to continuing the interview process," Livengood said in a statement. "We are looking forward to naming our new head coach very soon."

Rice and Theus, both of whom are former UNLV players, are considered the leading candidates.

UNLV is expected to hire one of them on Sunday or Monday.

Brown, 70, was fired by the Bobcats in December.

He hasn't coached college basketball since leading Kansas to the national title in 1988.

Larry Brown goes after bigger challenges.  He left Detroit when they were at their peak.  He tried to revive the Knicks but never happened.  Larry Brown was the most successful head coach in LA Clipper history and did a great job with the Spurs and Pacers.

Wouldn't it be nice to just see him go away?  Larry Brown has always been known to look for bigger and better things....perhaps he has just slipped...  It could be good for UNLV's program, I don't think so though.
Please...just retire already.

That would be funny. UNLV loses the former K-State coach in Lon Kruger and looks to hire the former KU coach in Larry Brown. Who knew that back in the late 1980s, when Brown and Kruger were coaching against each other at Kansas and Kansas State, that they would both wind up as coach of UNLV? Smile

EZ; I'm sure that you admire Magic Johnson, Ozzie Smith, and Joe Montana but these dudes are not relevant in 2011. Get over Larry and realize he was inept in New York and Charlotte and it won't get any better if this old dude gets another gig by a program desperate enough to hire him.You can't tell me that there isn't a young coach out there with the capability of restoring some level of success to UNLV basketball. My man; try thinking outside of the box!

I like it, good buzz for a team that hasn't been relevant in a long time. Coach Kruger was fine while he lasted, but contrary to other post, I respect the pedigree of Coach Brown. He's a teacher of the game, I like this move...if it happens.

Please, please Larry; just go off into the sunset, locker room, or golf course, but spare us another stint as a head coach. Especially in Vegas. Dude; it's time to admit that your methods are archaic and obsolete.Just go away!

Larry Brown is the greatest fake in the history of basketball.  It's really not that unbelievable, after all he is from UNC.

Oh come on Larry.  (You are killing me.)  You are becoming the journeyman of journeymen.
