Barnes returning to UNC

Posted on: April 18, 2011 9:21 am
Harrison Barnes announced on Monday that he will return to North Carolina for his sophomore season.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision, but I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina," Barnes said. "I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports. ... I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but [right now] I'm focused on being a student-athlete, and my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina."

Barnes would've been considered for the No. 1 overall pick had he entered the 2011 NBA Draft, but his decision isn't shocking considering he's always seemed different and more well-rounded than most other top-tier prospects. The 6-foot-8 wing averaged 15.7 points last season while leading the Tar Heels to an ACC regular-season title and the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. His return means North Carolina will be the consensus preseason No. 1 team.

"I'm very proud of my son and his decision," Barnes' mother, Shirley Barnes, told on Monday morning. "Next season should be exciting."

Barnes returning to UNC

Let's not forget there is an NBA work stoppage looming and there's no guarantee he would get paid or get to play next year.  Even if he's not thinking about that, I find it refreshing that a ball player would pass on being a lottery pick so that he could stay in school and possibly win a national championship.  The last time I can remember someone doing this it was.............Tyler Hansbrough and he won a championship.

Barnes returning to UNC

Going back to Barnes' announcement that he was coming to Carolina, the major difference between the programs he considered, Barnes said, was that Carolina had laid out a three year plan for him to graduate. Right there you saw the difference in this kid. He can play another year and still accomplish that goal.
Regarding POY, #1 in the draft: I don't believe he gives a rip about either one. He knows that he'll have a contract beyond what he can spend when he chooses to go, and he would rather have a National Championship banner and ring than a POY award and a hollow feeling. If he happens to earn a spot for his jersey in the rafters, he would consider it gravy as long as the 2012 NCAA banner flies there, too.

Barnes returning to UNC

How could Barnes turn down the chance to play for the Wolves, the Cavs or the Raps to go back to UNC ? He must be a smart dude !!!

I see what you are trying to do here, Gary.  You're trying to pseudo-salvage your pre-season player of the year prediction; but the truth is, Barnes would not have been the first pick in the draft.  You blew tha one Gary, and there are no "mulligans" here.  Barnes payed well, towards the end of the season, but was never the best player in the country --not even close.  In fact, I would'nt even predict that he'll be a player of the year candidate at the end of the coming season --I'm just not seeing it.

Oh the things you retarded butt sluts would be saying about both the player and Coach K if this was a Dukie................

You're calling someone else a "retarded butt slug"?  I'll show you retarded.

Guess he realized the NBA isn't real keen on small forwards that are slow and can't dribble.

Now that's retarded!  In other news..........

Here's to hoping somebody knocks that smug douchebag the fuck out.

Is that you Henderson?  Didn't Jordan show the world what a punk you are at your first Charlotte practice?

bigperm131, carry on exibiting the Duke idea of class.  I'm sure you make 'em proud.

as a Duke fan, I am sorry to see him stay.  He's got incredible talent.  I'd trade all 3 Clumsee's for Barnes

Barnes returning to UNC

well i can easily say unc will be on top of the acc once again next year. And i cant really blame the kid considersider the potential lockout with the nba and with how things are going with the nfl. the kid does have game but needs more polishing to reach potential in nba.

Barnes returning to UNC

Well said unforgiven.  As a Tarheel fan, of course I am extremely happy that Barnes is returning, but as a college basketball fan, I think it is great for Barnes, Sullinger and others to break the trend of one-and-done.  I am so tired of reading about players I have barely heard of entering the draft, and watching failure from players who could have benefitted from another year or two at the college level.

As for Bigperm and the comments about high school stars not panning out and knocking people out, you are just a complete moron.
