Barnes returning to UNC

Harrison Barnes announced on Monday that he will return to North Carolina for his sophomore season.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision, but I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina," Barnes said. "I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports. ... I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but [right now] I'm focused on being a student-athlete, and my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina."

Barnes would've been considered for the No. 1 overall pick had he entered the 2011 NBA Draft, but his decision isn't shocking considering he's always seemed different and more well-rounded than most other top-tier prospects. The 6-foot-8 wing averaged 15.7 points last season while leading the Tar Heels to an ACC regular-season title and the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. His return means North Carolina will be the consensus preseason No. 1 team.

"I'm very proud of my son and his decision," Barnes' mother, Shirley Barnes, told CBSSports.com on Monday morning. "Next season should be exciting."

@CoachKball:
Right now Rivers is a lottery pick. At this point last year, so was Josh Selby. I'm not asserting these two players have similar issues but, rather, just as you pointed out UNC has play their games to earn a #1 seed next season, the jury is out on Rivers and his game at the college level. Highly ranked high school prospects don't always pan out.

LMAO @ Bravesman. You dont think Rivers is going to be a lottery pick? Are you high or just a retard. My money is on the latter.

adonze40.....yes they will be the pre-season #1. UK has a chance to be as well, but the Heels experience will be the difference IMO.

However, how can you say that they "should already be a lock for #1 in the tourney". You still have to play the games man. They dont give 1 seeds for you're roster, you have to earn it.

nobody is taking austin rivers over harrison barnes next year. anthony davis, possibly, but barnes is a top 5 pick no matter what year he goes. as far as your little jab at williams,  he's the reason why this thing drew out as long as it did because he wanted barnes to seriously think about this decision, instead of just pulling the trigger and coming back when zeller and henson did. its not hard to imagine the kid wanting to be a legend at a historical program like UNC. This isn't just a developmental league team like Cal's running. Typical UK trash.

This is fantastic, he isnt ready for the NBA and my heels desperately need him...preseaon #1 and should already be a lock for a #1 in the tourney.  I did see someones post saying this is the most talented team in years....I'll take the '05 team.  Any team where one of the best players in the country is your 6th man is just nasty...can't wait for next season.

Good for him. It's refreshing to see guys like Barnes and Sullinger return to school when they're consensus top 3's. It's probably due to the likely lockout though. It sucks cuz the Wizards are sitting there as the likely 3rd pick and we are in desperate need of a young SF to groom. Josh Howard and his knee won't be coming back, and Lewis is gonna get his expiring deal traded by the deadline.

I just feel sorry for the teams that are gonna have to reach for a Jimmer Fredette and Kemba Walker now that the pickins are gettin slimmer. Not worried about my the Wiz. We got John Wall and Jordan Crawford for years to come.

I hate to say it, but he actually hurts himself by doing this, no matter what. There is little to no doubt in my mind that he would have been the top overall pick in a fairly weak draft this season, but next season will have several teams loaded with talents, and outliers all over the place. The bottom line: he won't be top pick next season - it'll be Rivers, or Davis Jr, or someone else who rises into the national spotlight come March.

He's a good player, but from an economic standpoint, this is a boneheaded decision which was likely egged on by Williams. Shame.
