Barnes returning to UNC

Harrison Barnes announced on Monday that he will return to North Carolina for his sophomore season.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision, but I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina," Barnes said. "I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports. ... I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but [right now] I'm focused on being a student-athlete, and my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina."

Barnes would've been considered for the No. 1 overall pick had he entered the 2011 NBA Draft, but his decision isn't shocking considering he's always seemed different and more well-rounded than most other top-tier prospects. The 6-foot-8 wing averaged 15.7 points last season while leading the Tar Heels to an ACC regular-season title and the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. His return means North Carolina will be the consensus preseason No. 1 team.

"I'm very proud of my son and his decision," Barnes' mother, Shirley Barnes, told CBSSports.com on Monday morning. "Next season should be exciting."

Barnes returning to UNC

It is refershing to see a kid that can put goals above quick money. I really like how he refers to himself as a student-athlete. His parents must be very proud of their son.

Smart move. He is not ready yet to start in the NBA. He improved the last part of the year. One more year in college probably number 1 pick and will start for the team that drafts him.

I love coming on here from time to time to see how DUMB some people can sound with their comments.
It would appear the title of your comment DUMB would have two meanings in your case. DUMB to think of such a comment to write and DUMB to write it.

Congrats guys! It is good for College hoops that kids like Sullinger and Barnes are coming back. I hate to see all these talented freshman leave for the NBA year after year. The NBA needs to get rid of the one year rule, and let them go straight to the NBA if they want to. Athletic scholarships should be for kids who actually want to be STUDENT/athletes, period.

As a Cleveland Cavs fan, I am disappointed...because his return to college obviously thins the talent pool in the up-coming draft. But...good for you Harrison! It's obvious your a bright young man!

Dumb.

Get the money now, while the getting is good.  He can play in the NBA for 8 years, amass more money than he can spend in a lifetime, take summer courses for those eight years, then complete his degree in a year, year and a half when he returns to school at age 27.  He could finish law school at 31 or medical school at 32.  I don't see the problem.  If he blows out a knee this year...

Barnes returning to UNC

Fellow Heels fans, lets enjoy this great news!!..We can already start celebrating the fact that we will OWN Duke next year!!!!..They have 3 Plumlees in the frontcourt against NBA top 20 picks of Barnes, Henson and Zeller...Plus we throw in James McAdoo, who will be coming off our bench, then going top 5 in the '12 Draft...WOW this must be such A BAD DAY for dookies...Just already knowing UNC is gonna whoop the dookies and take first in the ACC AGAIN..Unless those prancing fairies 'the Plumlees' can learn how to NOT AIRBALL FROM 3 FEET AWAY OR GET POSTERIZED BY SHORT GUARDS!!!!  HA!!..UNC BABY!!!..Better than Duke once again!!..I guess that 131-101 UNC DOMINATION OVER DUKE WILL CONTINUE!!!..

Only Kentucky has the possibility of competing with North Carolina in terms of roster quality (at least on paper)...but that depends on who comes back (ie Knight, Jones, etc.)

It's great about Barnes.  I didn't know Coach cal was so close to larry brown, who is a great friend of coach Smith.  Calipari is more UNC family than I ever realized.  I guess i will have to tone down the hatred.  larry Brown can be shady also but he is a Smith guy.
