Barnes returning to UNC

Harrison Barnes announced on Monday that he will return to North Carolina for his sophomore season.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision, but I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina," Barnes said. "I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports. ... I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but [right now] I'm focused on being a student-athlete, and my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina."

Barnes would've been considered for the No. 1 overall pick had he entered the 2011 NBA Draft, but his decision isn't shocking considering he's always seemed different and more well-rounded than most other top-tier prospects. The 6-foot-8 wing averaged 15.7 points last season while leading the Tar Heels to an ACC regular-season title and the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. His return means North Carolina will be the consensus preseason No. 1 team.

"I'm very proud of my son and his decision," Barnes' mother, Shirley Barnes, told CBSSports.com on Monday morning. "Next season should be exciting."

Barnes returning to UNC

If we go to the final four in 2012, does that mean we have to go back to the NIT in 2013?  Zeller will graduate, Henson and Barnes will go the the NBA. Deja vu all over again.

This years NBA draft is going to be pretty terrible....UNC might be the preseason number one with Barnes, Marshall and Co. back and a great player in James McAdoo coming in.

I totally agree. UNC will be a force to reckon with next year. I think this decision shows a maturity that lacks in most kids. The impending lockout may have played a role but nevertheless, the kid is staying put for now.

Barnes is only going to get better.  UNC top 3 to start the season.  Whoever said they were lagging behind Duke won't be talking long once the season starts.  Singler and Smith are gone.  No team can replace those two, even Duke.

Carolina has had many deep and talented teams in the years since I went to Chapel Hill as a freshman but on paper and, most probably, on the court, this the best ever. It starts with the great smile of John Henson and the growth of Kendall Marshall. Top talent at every position and a coach and fan base once again coming back from the NIT season of recent memory.

And, do not forget the incredibly insulting and poorly timed comment from Austin Whatshisname that Carolina is no longer competitive with Duke and has not held up its half of "The Rivalry".  Good luck to him and the Prancing Plumlees in 2011-2012.

UNC is the obvious choice as front runner for the upcoming NCAA basketball season. As long as they don't get to cocky they could easily take the ACC.

A formidable team?  Are you kidding me?  This team could be the best team Roy has ever had, and definitely better than the last 2 National Championship teams UNC has had.  Hands down the best starting 5 in the country and with McAdoo (MVP of the All American game) coming off the bench this team has no weaknesses.  Hang another banner Heels.

Ummm, Cal(houn) and UCONN just won a title with 112 min. of the championship game going to Freshmen. And that is about the same minute distribution that got them throuh the tournament.
