Barnes returning to UNC

Harrison Barnes announced on Monday that he will return to North Carolina for his sophomore season.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision, but I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina," Barnes said. "I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports. ... I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but [right now] I'm focused on being a student-athlete, and my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina."

Barnes would've been considered for the No. 1 overall pick had he entered the 2011 NBA Draft, but his decision isn't shocking considering he's always seemed different and more well-rounded than most other top-tier prospects. The 6-foot-8 wing averaged 15.7 points last season while leading the Tar Heels to an ACC regular-season title and the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. His return means North Carolina will be the consensus preseason No. 1 team.

"I'm very proud of my son and his decision," Barnes' mother, Shirley Barnes, told CBSSports.com on Monday morning. "Next season should be exciting."

UNC will have a formiddable team, no question but will the play to their strenghths is another.  I believe Henson will have a break out year and open a lot of eyes as maturity was all he needed.  He will be better than any other Heel barring injury.

Well this can be the end of my sweating bullets. I thought for sure Barnes was a goner. He has got a good head on his shoulders, basketball and academics. My Tarheels are going to be a very dominant team next year. I think that next years teams will be better than this years teams, thank you Mr. Sullinger. I was hoping D Williams would stay in Zona but money talks. Good luck next year Barnes and thank you for giving us one more year. Go Heels!!!!!

Smart move, given that there's a work-stoppage coming soon to the NBA.  Go ahead and get your education, maybe win an NCAA title (or two), and THEN hit the lottery after they've resolved the labor negotiating.

UNC will be better than Kentucky next year because of experience. The starting 5 will include a senior 2 juniors and 2 sophomores (NO FRESHMEN) and what Coach Cal repeatedly shows us is that a team that counts on a lot of freshmen can win a lot of games but typically can't handle the pressure of the NCAA tournament. UK is once again going to be banking on a stable of one-and-done players to lead them next year and they will not be able to beat a team like UNC in the tournament which has just as much depth and talent but far more experience.

Coach Cal might win one title at UK if he has a team like the 03 Syracuse team with a bunch of freshmen who can overcome their lack of experience but those are few and far between (as are talents like Carmelo Anthony) and he will never win multiple titles for the Wildcats-a feat alreay accomplished by 'Ol Roy.
