Harrison Barnes announced on Monday that he will return to North Carolina for his sophomore season.

"Opportunities, both beneficial and life changing, can seem to make the next phase of my journey an easy decision, but I am a student-athlete at the University of North Carolina," Barnes said. "I'm here to experience college life, grow as a person, receive a quality education, and be part of the greatest basketball family in college sports. ... I look forward to meeting the challenging journey in the NBA, but [right now] I'm focused on being a student-athlete, and my decision is to continue this part of my journey at the University of North Carolina."

Barnes would've been considered for the No. 1 overall pick had he entered the 2011 NBA Draft, but his decision isn't shocking considering he's always seemed different and more well-rounded than most other top-tier prospects. The 6-foot-8 wing averaged 15.7 points last season while leading the Tar Heels to an ACC regular-season title and the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. His return means North Carolina will be the consensus preseason No. 1 team.

"I'm very proud of my son and his decision," Barnes' mother, Shirley Barnes, told CBSSports.com on Monday morning. "Next season should be exciting."

Amazing

We were lucky to have you for one year, Mr. Barnes, let alone two!

Work harder than everyone else this summer.

Cut down the nets next year.

This may end up being Roy's most talented team.  Couple that with experience and the ingredients for a deep run are there!

Zeller
Henson
Barnes
Strickland
Marshall

Bench: McAdoo, Hairston, McDonald, Bullock, Watts, Hubert......... could be a scary good team!

Great decision.

This makes UNC the team to beat in 2011-12 in my opinion.....that UK - UNC game at Rupp should be a classic......

Now this is awesome.  Next year is shaping up to be a monster on the college basketball scene. There are great players coming back for several different teams, and great players coming in as well.  Good thing baseball season will keep me distracted until Big Blue Madness!

Overhyped initially, but Harrison Barnes is a very real talent & would have almost certainly been a Top 3-5 pick.  No, he'll likely never be Kevin Durant, but he should be a very good pro & this is a boon for the Tar Heels.  Good for him, Perry Jones III & Jared Sullinger (& college basketball).

Barnes returning to UNC

I heard he wanted to stay for three years when he was recruited. I hope he does that but I totally understand (though I'd be dissapointed for sure) if he found the call of the NBA and the associated money too hard to ignore.

"Next season should be exciting."

Oh yeah it should be!

If BKnight returns to UK, they're the #1 team. Congrats to Harrison for making a mature choice. Great kid and a great player.  But all I can say is 76-69. LOL We'll see you guys in December! Go Big Blue!
