Pitino no longer coaching Puerto Rico team

Posted on: April 27, 2011 8:38 am

Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is backing out of an agreement to coach the Puerto Rico national team in preparation for the 2011 pre-Olympic qualifying tournament because of scheduling conflicts, the school announced Wednesday morning.

"Too many conflicts arose," Pitino said. "It is a great disappointment that we cannot take on the challenge to help them qualify for the Olympics."

One issue, according to Louisville officials, is that Pitino had hoped to take the Cardinals with him to Puerto Rico on a preseason "foreign" trip so that he could work with them while also working with the Puerto Rico national team, but the NCAA declined to OK that plan because Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States. Consequently, Puerto Rico is not considered a "foreign" site under NCAA rules.

"We were hoping to arrange for both the Puerto Rico and our UofL teams to play at the same foreign site, which could not be accommodated," Pitino said. "An additional tournament in Brazil would have also kept me from being in Louisville at a key time for the start of the fall semester."

Perhaps he couldn't find a hair stylist who could cover what looks like thinning on his dome.  Or a good enough dry cleaner for his expensive suits.  Or enough cheap blonde strange.  Oh well, the dyed-blonde young ladies of San Juan will have to find someone else to occupy that 15 seconds.

I got the perfect replacement!

Bobby Knight.  I understand he has some outstanding business in Puerto Rico so this should work out for him.

You have to overlook UK fans ! They aren't the brightest folks in the room !

Like you would overlook a certain coach and his 15 seconds of fame....or certain basketball players being arrested for assault? Is this what you mean?

Oh, and by the way....Kentucky officially swept the entire season from Loserville today....football, basketball, and now baseball.....

Loserville....second best in the state of Kentucky....except in basketball, where you are third best!!

1st off... UkSmithfan... really... You're a Tubby Smith guy?  All that Rick did for UK & Tubby... and you're going to trash on Rick?

Rick was LONG gone from Kentucky and Tubby Smith WAS the head coach when I started this ID, so, yes, Tubby Smith. I was TOO high up in ranking, so I decided to keep it, considering that others around here knew me as this.

As for trashing Rick....my comments had nothing to do with trashing him, so go beatch at someone else. My comments were straight on. His coaching staff WAS a mess when he was negotiating with PR, and his players WERE decommitting, due to coaches leaving. Nothing wrong at all with my comments. He had bigger issues to deal with than coaching PR to the Olympics.

NCAA continues to show no class and is clueless. Of course, PR is a commonwealth but to those of us in the continental US, it is more of a foreign country.

They continue to screw up the world and worry about players selling crap than anything.
