Pitino no longer coaching Puerto Rico team

Posted on: April 27, 2011 8:38 am

Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is backing out of an agreement to coach the Puerto Rico national team in preparation for the 2011 pre-Olympic qualifying tournament because of scheduling conflicts, the school announced Wednesday morning.

"Too many conflicts arose," Pitino said. "It is a great disappointment that we cannot take on the challenge to help them qualify for the Olympics."

One issue, according to Louisville officials, is that Pitino had hoped to take the Cardinals with him to Puerto Rico on a preseason "foreign" trip so that he could work with them while also working with the Puerto Rico national team, but the NCAA declined to OK that plan because Puerto Rico is a Commonwealth of the United States. Consequently, Puerto Rico is not considered a "foreign" site under NCAA rules.

"We were hoping to arrange for both the Puerto Rico and our UofL teams to play at the same foreign site, which could not be accommodated," Pitino said. "An additional tournament in Brazil would have also kept me from being in Louisville at a key time for the start of the fall semester."

Maybe they couldn't line up a busty, blonde ex-model for him down there.

Oh, well-maybe next time!

It's a pity, really, because there are plenty of women, which would enable him to pursue his, shall we say, extracurricular activities.

Pitino's coaching staff is a mess?

But ummmmmm.......... little Richard Pitino is now back on the L'ville staff to save the day. Just forget the fact that he was run from the Florida staff after only one year...

1st off... UkSmithfan... really... You're a Tubby Smith guy?  All that Rick did for UK & Tubby... and you're going to trash on Rick?
2nd.. I don't understand the reason why it would matter if PR is "foreign" or not?  I think this is a huge miss & the NCAA with their weak paint brushing of their rules when they want to (meaning when their palms are greased).

all the 15 seconds of humor aside....

This is a huge miss for College Basketball, the Olympics, Louisville and the young men in Puerto Rico.  Coach Pitino is one of the best coaches and would have been a big help to the Puerto Rican team.  The TV coverage of a potential Coach P and Coach K match would bring money.  Recruiting between PR and UofL would have been even better established.   Everyone would benifit had this worked out.

I find it unfortunate.

"Puerto Rico" is from Old Spanish.  It means "He who copulates in restaurants".  So there was a conflict.

Or could the REAL reason be because his coaching staff is a mess, and players keep decommitting? Time to concentrate on his REAL job duties at Louisville, instead of getting Puerto Rico into the Olympics?????
