Gary Williams is retiring as Maryland's basketball coach, a source confirmed to on Thursday.

Williams subsequently confirmed the news with a released statement.

“It’s the right time,” Williams said. “My entire career has been an unbelievable blessing. I am fiercely proud of the program we have built here. I couldn’t have asked any more from my players, my assistant coaches, the great Maryland fans and this great university. Together, we did something very special here."

Williams spent 22 seasons at Maryland and led the Terrapins to the 2002 national championship while making 14 NCAA tournament appearances, seven Sweet Sixteens, two Elite Eights and two Final Fours. In recent years, though, he struggled recruiting the Washington D.C./Baltimore area and had grown tired of the summer culture where most high-major recruiting now takes place, a source said. Williams had not made the Sweet Sixteen since 2003. The Terrapins were 19-14 overall, 7-9 in the ACC last season. Their best player, Jordan Williams, announced on Wednesday that he is hiring an agent and staying in the 2011 NBA Draft.

The Maryland job is now the biggest available job from this offseason.

Coaches widely consider it to be one of the nation's best jobs because of its natural recruiting base.

"The right guy there will kill it," a source told "If they get the right guy, they'll win really big."

This is a sad sad day for the extended Maryland family.

It seemed like coach Williams would be there forever.

I guess the time was right.  His passion and teaching was not enough to overcome the lack of talented players.

Big time college sports just chew up those guys who want to do it the right way and teach young men.

Gary could not bring himself to "Calipari" his way into the AAU game and modern recruiting gray areas.   He stepped aside before he compromised his stance.

I hope retirement treats this legend well.

Go Terps.

I wish Coach Williams the best of luck and enjoy the retired life.  He did an outstanding job as the coach for Maryland and cleaned up a program that was in trouble because tge death of an outstanding basketball player that I have decided to not mention his name..  The university will have a tough time filling his shoes.  The ACC is a tough conference to coach in and Williams earned the respect from all the fellow coaches in the ACC.

an absolute fixture in the NCAA coaching scene. Outside of Coach K and Calhoun, there was no other coach I respected as much as Gary Williams. Despite having what many would see as subpar talent, he managed to make his units work cohesively every year.

Despite all the jeering we've given you over the past decades, we'll miss you in Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Next to Coach K and Dean Smith, a face of the ACC for 2+ decades. The new AD wasn't doing an extension. Fridge and Gary in same season - no coincidence. AD Anderson aspires to turn my Terps into the Army of the ACC.

Washington Post is reporting that Gary got in a few digs at Debbie Yow on the way out the door.  Those two will forever snipe at each other.

maryland basketball will never be the same. this is depressing. gary isnt retiring, he's "retiring". one of the greatest COACHES of all time. notice i emphasized the word coach. sorry he couldent be john calipari. then again he never had the ncaa infractions committee sniffing around the md program. so im not sorry.
