Brey out at Maryland, too

Notre Dame's Mike Brey is the latest candidate to remove his name from Maryland's coaching search, the Washington Post reported Sunday. Consequently, one of the nation's best jobs will remain open until at least Monday. Where the search will turn next is unclear.

"I don’t believe it’s going to be a long process,” Maryland athletic director Kevin Anderson told the paper on Sunday. “We’re doing our due diligence, making sure we’re going to hire the right person. ... We’re just not going to panic and pick somebody who might not be the best fit for Maryland. We’re going to look at the whole person. Here’s what I’m looking for: Someone with most, if not all, of the qualities Gary Williams possessed."

Pittsburgh's Jamie Dixon, Villanova's Jay Wright and Arizona's Sean Miller have also removed their names from consideration, meaning four men who were obvious candidates have essentially passed on the opportunity to succeed Gary Williams -- the legendary coach who retired last Thursday after 22 seasons at the school. Maryland has also reportedly reached out to Butler's Brad Stevens in an informal manner. Stevens, though, rejected the overture, leaving Anderson as the latest in a long line of athletic directors to have trouble filling a high-profile basketball opening.

Good move Brey, Stay at ND and continue to build that hoops program. But cannot argue the two conferences (ACC and Big East).

Brey out at Maryland, too

Villanova and Pitt are better programs than Maryland. Is it better to exit in the first weekend or not even make the first weekend?? Not that that fact reflects the job at all. Maryland has a far better recruiting area?? Are you retarded?? Maryland has 3 kids coming in next season, 1 from Maryland, 1 from Jersey, and 1 from Wisconsin. The Northeast has the best HS basketball in the entire country. Between Philly, NYC, and the Jersey schools there is no area in the country that provides more talent than that area.

Maryland is a similar job to UND, better by not by much. Mike Brey didnt think so. MAryland has ended the season ranked in the final polls twice in the last 6 seasons. They have made no noise in the tournament in quite some time. The ACC is weak and so is Maryland.

Villanova, Pitt, Notre Dame are better jobs??????????????? You have GOT to be kidding me!!!!!!!!!! No, Maryland did not make the tournament, but after the first weekend, all three of these "powerhouses" from the Big Bad Big East were at home watching the rest of the tournament as well after they were all shown the door with the quickness! Maryland has far better facilities and recruiting area than those three combined!!!!

ACC No Longer Coaches Top Job Premier Conference!

The tough time NCS, GT, and now Maryland has in attracting Top Coaches willing to coach in the ACC reveals why the ACC is just 2 Team conference the last 10 years. When Top Coaches refuse Maryland it is really a rejection of the ACC. The ACC is about UNC & DUKE and all other schools are an AfterFart! The Football Expansion really has killed ACC Premier Status as a Basketball Conference.

As it stand now, it is the

Brey has been about as consistent as they come in the Big East the last several seasons.  Look it up.
I don't agree with that. Yes, the last five years have been 20+ win seasons for Notre Dame, but the guy hasn't been able to get out of the second round of the tournament.

The three years before the last five?  A 19, 17 and 16 win season.

Then the three seasons before that... three 20+ win seasons.

I get that programs have down years... but the program flops all over the place... especially during Big East play.

Maryland is definitely not an elite program. They are a good program who is down as of late. No big name coach is going to leave their respectives schools to take it. Notre Dame is just as good a job as Maryland is now a days. Pittsburgh and Villanova are better jobs.

Maryland is going to have to go find a mid major coach to come in. Jim Laranega might have been a good fit here but he is already Miami bound. How about Chris Mooney from Richmond?? Can recruit the area already and has Richmond on the rise in the last couple of seasons. Might be a good fit here for Maryland.

I do not think we can free up Wojo from the hardwood, his hands are stuck to the court - time for an old Cole cheer - "Wojo Blows!"
