Texas A&M search nearing end

Murray State's Billy Kennedy remains the perceived favorite to replace Mark Turgeon at Texas A&M, a source told CBSSports.com on Saturday. But athletic director Bill Byrne is still exploring other options -- specifically Northern Iowa coach Ben Jacobson and Texas A&M assistant Scott Spinelli.

A source told CBSSports.com that after interviewing Kennedy, Byrne flew to North Dakota late Saturday afternoon to meet with Jacobson in person. The source added that Spinelli remains a realistic option, too. Either way, the source said, Byrne is expected to close the search by the end of the weekend.

Turgeon left Texas A&M last week after accepting the job at Maryland.

Texas A&M projects as a preseason Top 25 team.

The ACC is not the best basketball conference. Last year the Big 12 was much better than the ACC. What preconceived notion are going by?? The ACC is a 2 team league, Duke and UNC. All the other programs are bubble teams or worse in the past 5 years.

The ACC was probably the 4th or 5th best conference in the country last year. The Big East is by far the best conference year in and year out.

No matter how much money you pay the new aggie coach, he will still be living in Bryan-College Station.  Being a resident there ranks with the guys putting those reflectors on tar roadsin the summer and chicken de-sexers as three of the worst jobs in Texas.

I wonder how many Ole Miss fans read this article praying it was about Andy Kennedy.   I'd buy his damn plane ticket.

Personally, I do not think Turgeon left A&M for Terpland just for money.  Just as football is so much more prestigious in SEC, B12, B10 and P10 then ACC basketball is much more prestigious and competitive than all the other conferences in ACC.  Also, as wonderful a game coach G. Williams has been he has never had success in recruiting from the middle Atlantic mother lode of high school talent.   Turgeon is ready to attack this and play in the #1 bball conference in the US.

Terps are paying good money but I doubt this was determinging decision.

If A&M had paid their other coach a lot more money, he wouldn't have left for the MD job.  Now, they are going to have to overpay for some mid-major coach.

What an amusingly ignorant comment.

Maybe if they hire a mid-major coach, they'll actually beat Kansas for once...  Kansas has beaten A&M six times in a row, but was eliminated by VCU and Northern Iowa in the last two NCAA tournaments.

If Teaxs A&M ends up with Murray State's Bill Kennedy as there next head coach then they ended up with a very good coach then.

Kennedy has done well at Murray. Murray has been a great stepping stone for both football and basketball coaches in the past with the likes of Mike Gottfried, Frank Beamer, Houston Nutt, Mark Gottfried and others coaching the Racers. If Kennedy does go, I would like to see Pelfrey revitalize at MSU.
