Jones transferring out of Arizona program

Arizona sophomore Lamont "MoMo" Jones is transferring out of the Wildcats program.

Multiple outlets in Arizona reported the news Monday night.

The 6-foot point guard averaged 9.7 points last season and helped the Wildcats reach the Elite Eight of the NCAA tournament. The reason behind Jones' decision is unclear, but it's worth noting that Sean Miller is about to enroll a heralded recruiting class headlined by Josiah Turner, a 6-3 point guard many expected to take Jones' starting job next season. Turner is widely considered to be among the top three point guards in the Class of 2011.

I figured the new guys would really push him to get better or push him out of the way.  Momo doesn't bring enough consistent interior penetration or perimeter shooting.  Aside from a few nice games last year.  Wish you well buddy !

This is a best case situation for both parties.  For Momo, he can move closer to home and compete at another place for more playing time.  For UA, not only does it mean there are only 5 guards on the roster but it gets them at scholarship limit.  With Fogg and Lavender set to graduate next season, it also opens up another guard spot for a 2012 recruit (Muhammad anyone?).  Now UA has 5 potential scholarships for 2012 and at least potentially 8 over two years.  If Turner and Johnson are as good as advertised then Momo was likely to be the odd man out.  Fogg and Lavender are true SGs and better defenders and Mayes is more of a true PG.

I wll miss Momo's fearlessness and swagger and wish him the best of luck wherever he goes.  He did a fine job in helping ease the transition and bringing us back amongst the elite.

Good Luck to MoMo wherever he ends up (I'm thinking St. Johns). Thanks for the memories and your part in restoring Arizona back to its place among the elite programs in the nation. I think his reasons of wanting to be close to family is legit, he'd been talking to Miller about it since early spring, but I can't help but to think the guards coming in with this class made his decision a little easier. We will have two legit point guards and Momo wasn't going to get as much PT as last year. He also was going to have a hard time competing for floor time at the 2 with Fogg and the incoming freshmen. No matter where he ends up, he will always be a Wildcat!! Bear Down!

This is kind of a surprise. With the new players coming in, you would think that this is just what the doctor ordered, for MoMo. He was not a true point guard, and only was put in that spot because he was the best Ariz had, to put in that spot. It was said he was a shooting guard, and once the Uof A got a true point in, that he would be able to return to that high scorer, up tempo player he is. Might be more to this than him not wanting to fight for a position. He is a player, not a quiter......

I hate to see MoMo go, but replacing Derrick Williams is a far greater task.

Jones transferring out of Arizona program

MoMo Jones transferring out of Arizona will hurt UA but just a little and that's all. The only reason why Jones is leaving is not because he wants to be close to home or of family issues but because of both new comers of Josiah Turner and Nick Johnson that's why he is leaving. UA will be fine without Jones and the Wildcats will still be picked by the experts to win the new Pac-12 this upcoming season no matter if Jones is or isn't on the team.

torn on this one...MoMo showed signs of greatness followed by lapses in skills. I loved his intensity during their NCAA run but I will not miss his cocky attitude. I have always enjoyed the quiet ballers that just get the job done. Act like you've been there before.

I agree with another poster that wrote if he isn't willing to fight for his position, then leaving is the best option for all parties involved. I do think he would've learned more under Miller then going elsewhere...I guess that depends where he goes.

Clearly it would've been better to have choices next season but this isn't the first time and it won't be the last time a player leaves a program for another.

Best of luck MoMo and thanks for your help!

Not that upset about him leaving. A good player but far from needed. He likely was going to lose his starting job and I believe that's why he's leaving. If a player isn't willing to fight for their spot, I'd rather not have him suiting up for us.
