Tennessee missed a bunch of shots and still won

Butch Pierre is one helluva defensive coach.

Or either Tennessee just picked a strange time to stink offensively.

Either way, the worst team in the SEC (LSU) spent Saturday nearly beating the best team in the SEC (Tennessee), and it's hard to imagine emotion didn't play a role. LSU was on the court roughly 24 hours after its coach, John Brady, had stood in front of reporters and discussed his in-season firing while battling back tears. That's a rally-the-troops moment every time. And so the Tigers used the inspiration to take the Vols into the final minute before losing on a turnover that led to a JaJuan Smith layup with 11 seconds remaining.

Final score: Tennessee 47, LSU 45.

Yep, UT scored just 47 points ... which is wild for a team that came in averaging 85.4 points per game . That number ranked first in the SEC and fifth in the nation. But it's difficult to reach the 80s (or 70s or 60s or 50s, even) while shooting 31.7 percent from the field (19-of-60), 26.3 percent from 3-point range (5-of-19) and 26.7 percent from the free throw line (4-of-15) , and how in the world can a group of players on full scholarships to a basketball power make just 4-of-15 free throw attempts?

Answer: I have no idea.

But the good news for Tennessee is that it managed to win another road game in spite of itself. The Vols' road record is now 7-1, and that's the main reason they will maintain the best RPI in the nation. Their next road game is Feb. 16 at Georgia, and a week after that they'll have a shot to derail Memphis' perfect season when they enter FedExForum for a showdown that has long been soldout and will make ticket scalpers rich if the current prices at StubHub are any indication.

For sure the above sentence sums it up

I can remember well a time Tennessee would NOT have won any close games

I am really looking forward to seeing how they do Wednesday against Auburn Tigers to see what growth the team has since the Kentucky game

The best teams in the country need to find ways to win when things go bad.  Tennessee showed us in the LSU game that they can play different styles of basketball.  They proved to me that they are indeed one of the best.  Now.. lets just see what happens when they have Memphis in their grasp!

Try to run your half court and quite looking for a bunch of 3s.

First off, learn to spell. Second, that's how UT beats other teams. They run them into the ground with fast breaks and transition points and then they live by the three, die by the three. That's UT basketball and that's why they're so fun to watch.

Go Big Orange.

hey stanrod.  how about you actually understand what is going on before making a post.  Maryland is 62nd in the RPI rankings.  those are computer rankings.  people dont vote on it.  the terps themselves have earned that ranking.

But i guess this is a good win for the vols.  i want them to keep winning so that when they play UK it will look better on UK's resume.  :)  haha.  just playin i doubt UK will win but i still have hope!

This game was ugly but.... it was a game that the Vols lose in the past. The defense was outstanding for the most part and 22 forced turnovers on the road is huge. I do agree about the foul shooting - horrible. Come March that free throw shooting could and usually does determine who advances and does not. Chism is a disgrace at the foul line along with JP Prince. Prince has no game other than driving to the basket and it can't finish at the rim and take advantage of the free throws that he gets by going to the rim then he is liability. Teams have figured out that he has no jump shot at all.  Chris at 50% from the field- thank goodness he has found his shot - the BIG ORANGE will need him all the way from here on out

Some people say margin of victory is a good guideline to use when predicting how teams will fare in March.

Tennessee is winning too many close ones. Will this hurt them in March? It seemed to in 2006 when they beat a 15 seed by 2 points and then were outplayed the entire game in the 2nd round against a 7.

The only thing i can really take negatively awat from this game is the dismal free-throw shooting. I completly agree with him in saying if you call yourself a scholarship player at a major university you should be able to shot at least 70% from the free throw strike.
