The referees hate Villanova

AUSTIN, Texas -- I'm here at the Kansas-Texas game so I just saw a replay of the Villanova-Georgetown finish.

Holy moly!

They've been playing basketball for many decades.

So I suppose there have been worse calls in the sport.

But I can tell you I have never seen a worse call that decided a game, and nobody here in the media room could remember one either. I mean, how do you call that type of foul in a tie game 70-feet from the basket with less than a second remaining? It wasn't only bad, it was inexcusable to the point where the official who made the call should have to issue a public apology to Villanova and college basketball fans in general just like Illinois athletic director Ron Guenther had to apologize to Indiana last week.

And if you're keeping count, that's twice this season that Villanova has lost a game in the final second because of a questionable call (the other was against North Carolina State) and twice this season that Georgetown has won a game in the final second because of a questionable call or no-call (the other was against West Virginia).

In other words, referees clearly hate Jay Wright and love John Thompson III.

There is no other explanation.

Bad call, but Georgetown player shouldn't have even tried to make any type of contact.  If he backs off game goes to overtime.  Must be smart at all times and not put yourself in any situation where refs can screw you.

I hate how people say he got hit hard. Wallace never stepped out of bounds if u watch the replay and he was dribbling out of control to get the shot off. If you watch the play again Stokes was already at the side playing the perimeter, he had no intention of trying to block or foul a 70 foot launch. The refs made awful calls all game on both sides. But the refs should know how much time is on the clock at all times, I mean their paid to follow the rules. All game they have to keep track of 10 second, 3 second, 5 second violations all game. And some of you fans are telling me they shouldn't notice how much time is left in the game???? They should have let the game go into OT. I'd rather have Nova lose then b/c then I know they deserved it. Yea they shot awful all game, but their D for the first time all season, played great w/ 3 guys fouling out.

I'm sure most of you play b-ball for organized leagues. Whoever thinks that was a foul has never played before. These NCAA kids are much tougher than we are, thats why their great at that level. So for a wussy foul like that to be called by an experienced ref makes no sense at all to me. Refs in intramural leagues even would have let that go, and they don't have much experience. Most refs know, w/ less then a minute that it has to be an intentional or pretty tough foul to call it; especially w/ time expiring. Jay Wright needs to get pissed off more about the awful calls that happen at the end of games w/in the past few years. It happened against UNC in 2005, and vs. NC St. this year, now this. He nevers says anything. So the refs think its okay to keep doing it b/c he gets bullied around.

Not sure what all the complaining is about.  There was contact and the defensive player did not establish position.  It could have gone either way, but this is not the worst call at the end of a game, not even the worst call of the night (see Tennessee/Rutgers game).

I am not aware of any rule that changes the stipulations on fouls in the final seconds of the game.  In fact, its the players responsibility to know the time is running down not the refs.  The player has to know not to foul when there is no chance of G'town scoring, not the ref.

and I was rooting against Georgetown.

What is your problem Parrish????? Do you and Doyle (Gregg with 2 G's) have something against Illinois basketball? I have been a member of sportsline since 98 - way back when Scott and Sid did "The Drive", Hot Sauce Harry's ran tons of ads and you used to get points that you could trade in for merchandise (I just had to toss my Sportsline T-Shirt - got a little too old). In those 10 years I have never run across 2 more complete jerkoffs that seem to have an obsession with badmouthing one particular program. Guenther, your Eric Gordon obsession, your insistence that Iloinois NOT make the tourney last year, Doyle's comments about Weber and all the "I told ya so's". Why don't you guys go find an airport bathroom to hang out in????

Despite the terrible call, it should be noted that the Nova player was fundamentally wrong for half-heartedly attacking the dribbler.   HE'S 90 FEET FROM THE BASKET WITH A SECOND LEFT IN A TIE GAME!!!  Bracket him in, but don't even come close to contact, especially with moronic, whistle-happy officials on the court.  Why you'd put yourself in such a needlessly helpless position is beyond me.  Coach needs to have a talk with that boy.

Not sure that call was any worse than the 15-20 ticky-tack calls made during the course of the game.  College hoops is so poorly officiated, it's as if the officials ... and by extension, the NCAA, who ostensibly governs said officials ... don't realize that basketball is a contact sport.  Quoth Breaking Training-era Bad News Bears ... "Let! Them! Play! Let! Them! Play!"  Just terrible.

what the hell were you watching, wallace dribbles the ball towards the sidelines, if you watched you knucklehead you would have seen stokes drift away from wallace and wallace brushed stokes and stepped out of bounds.

For those that say the game should be called the same with 1 second left as with 18:45... no. I disagree. I disagree because the game is not played the same with 1 second left as with 18:45, so why should it be called the same? You don't heave up a 70-foot shot with 18:45 left in the game.
