The referees hate Villanova

AUSTIN, Texas -- I'm here at the Kansas-Texas game so I just saw a replay of the Villanova-Georgetown finish.

Holy moly!

They've been playing basketball for many decades.

So I suppose there have been worse calls in the sport.

But I can tell you I have never seen a worse call that decided a game, and nobody here in the media room could remember one either. I mean, how do you call that type of foul in a tie game 70-feet from the basket with less than a second remaining? It wasn't only bad, it was inexcusable to the point where the official who made the call should have to issue a public apology to Villanova and college basketball fans in general just like Illinois athletic director Ron Guenther had to apologize to Indiana last week.

And if you're keeping count, that's twice this season that Villanova has lost a game in the final second because of a questionable call (the other was against North Carolina State) and twice this season that Georgetown has won a game in the final second because of a questionable call or no-call (the other was against West Virginia).

In other words, referees clearly hate Jay Wright and love John Thompson III.

There is no other explanation.

No, you don't have to call a foul there. Any experience ref shoudl know that. He barely touched him...Wallace went out to try to draw a foul. He was even laughing about it. He was not going to get a shot off anyway so you can't call a foul on a play that would have no bearing on the outcome. The ref should be suspended. It's the only way for these guys to be held accountable. Then maybe next time they will think about the game situation before trying to determine the outcome.

Jay Bilas got it right when he said there was no advantage gained or lost by that contact, being 70 feet away from the basket, it was the most ridiculous call I've ever seen, and it freakin pissed me off that it totally screwed nova's attempt to salvage their season

The referees hate Villanova & Rutgers.

Did you see the end of the Rutgers v. Tennessee game that had to be one of the best home cooking I've seen maybe since the early 80's.  While watching that game live I knew that timekeeper was playing games.  I noticed while watching the end of that game that the time had slowed down, if that possible, and yes it's possible.  My heart goes out to the Rutgers women basketball team they won the game, and its a shame that the official record will mark this game has a loss for Rutgers.  That time keeper should not keep his job, I heard some report that the game clock is synced with the official whistle, this system does not work and should be dismantled before it cost another team a win.  The RUTGERS women's basketball can't by a break , all in all in my eyes and hopefully the eyes of the committee this was a great two weeks for the Rutger women's team first they beat the #1 team in UCONN and then they beat #2 Tenn.  one of the great feats in basketball period.

I agree that the call was questionable at best.  I am not a GTown or Nova fan, I was just watching the ending of the game on ESPN and I could not believe the call.  However I have to agree with those who say it does not matter if there is .1 seconds remaining or if the game just started.  You have to call every foul the same.  As a college basketball fan, nothing gets under my skin more than a referee letting contact happen in the final minute without calling a foul.

That being said...I do not think there was significant contact to warrant a foul.  However, the play was just dumb.  The Villanova player, not the referee, has to think about time and score.  With under half a second to go in a tie game, you cannot put yourself in the position for a referee to call a foul on you.  There is little, if anything, that the player could have done with the time remaining.  Just keep away from him, because you know referees make questionable calls.  That's who all the Villanova fans should be mad at.  The player should have stayed away from the situation and not given the referees a chance to call a foul.  I'm just sad the game did not go into OT.  Could have been a great finish....

csq,

I agree about the call.  There was no gain by either side so I dont see a reason to call a foul in that situation.

Yes I agree it was a bad call merely for the fiming of the matter.  However, Villanova was giving touch fouls all game to put Scottie Reynolds on the line.  It wasn't even the worst call in the game.  There were calls all night against G-Town that kept Villanova in the game.  They shouldn't have even been in the position to tie this game given they shot 13% in the second half.  The Refs were calling bad fouls all night against G-town.  They call one bad foul against Villanova and all of a sudden the Refs hate Villanova.  G-town played tremendous defense at the end and was fortunate to get a call.  They should have won the game by about 15 points.

I don't think you get the fact that, 8th ranked or not, most every conference game, especially rivalry ones, are battles. Just because you're ranked doesn't mean there aren't good teams out there that can beat you, or that you should blow everyone out.

Good idea to call out Thompson, because I'm sure it's all his fault....

And nice idea with all caps, too.

If you're going to say that, then referees should call every foul...and every game would get bogged down with both teams being in the bonus with 15 minutes remaining. I don't think the ref was thinking about having guts and making a call with 0.1 seconds left.

You're right to say that the game should be called the same way the entire game. The thing is, it's just not reality. Coaches, and I'm sure some refs would say, that you don't get certain calls late in the game. Things get let go a little more...and mostly because refs are human, and don't want to "mess" a game up by calling a "cheap" foul late that can affect the outcome. In my own experiences, I see it all the time...fouls that are called at 18:45 aren't always called at 0.1...it's the nature of the beast.

I'm going to say this one more time to all of you G town fans who think the ref should have called that foul.  There should have been one on Rivers 3 seconds before when Reynolds was driving.  Using the same logic as all you knuckle heads, He was bumped out of bounds just like Wallace.  It was a good no call, the ref should not have called a foul on Rivers.  IF THERE WAS NO FOUL CALLED ON STOKES AGAINST WALLACE TIME WOULD HAVE RAN OUT REGARDLESS OF IF HE STEPPED OUT OF BOUNDS OR NOT.  THATS WHAT YOU PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND.  NICE TRY ATTEMPTING TO EXPLAIN WHY THE REF MADE THE CALL.

BOTTOM LINE IS GEORGETOWN SHOULD BE HANGING THEIR HEADS AFTER THAT WIN, 8TH RANKED TEAM IN THE COUNTRY STRUGGLING AGAINST A BELOW AVERAGE TEAM?

JOHN THOMPSON BETTER FIND A WAY TO MOTIVATE HIS PLAYERS OR IT WILL BE AN EARLY EXIT IN MARCH.
