Gregg Doyel wrote a column this week about the National Coach of the Year race.

His pick (at this point): Duke's Mike Krzyzewski.

That's a nice selection, assuming Roy Williams doesn't strangle Coach K before the ceremony.

And though I believe it's too early to name a winner just yet, I feel comfortable providing a list of 15 legitimate candidates.

So here is a list (presented in alphabetical order):
  • Rick Barnes (Texas)
  • Randy Bennett (Saint Mary's)
  • Mike Brey (Notre Dame)
  • Jim Calhoun (Connecticut)
  • John Calipari (Memphis)
  • Keno Davis (Drake)
  • Trent Johnson (Stanford)
  • Mike Krzyzewski (Duke)
  • Sean Miller (Xavier)
  • Matt Painter (Purdue)
  • Bruce Pearl (Tennessee)
  • Bo Ryan (Wisconsin)
  • Herb Sendek (Arizona State)
  • Kevin Stallings (Vanderbilt)
  • Brad Stevens (Butler)

Fifteen candidates for National Coach of the Year

Where is John Beilein of Michigan!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? He took a team with essentially two stars (Manny Harris and DeShawn Sims) who won 10 games last year to a 20 win season, with another one coming in the NCAA TOURNY!!!!! This turnaround just goes to prove why Beilein needs to be Coach of the Year

As much as I hate to say it (holding a real dislike for all things Notre Dame), but the job Mike Brey is doing at ND is pretty amazing.  For a team that's basically been an afterthought for most of the past twenty years, he's got them competing day-in, day-out with the likes of G'town, UL, and UCONN (except, of course, on the road where they've been pounded by Georgetown and Marquette).  Winning out their last three (which should happen) will put them at 24-6 going into tourney time.  Yeah, I know he's got all of the Irish assets behind him, but what he's doing on the floor in a tough conference is hard to ignore.

Uh, he cheated his way out of one of the best jobs in college basketball and may never coach in Division 1 again.  I think it's pretty fair to leave him out of the discussion.

After beating Tennessee, is there any reason why Stallings shouldn't be considered on of the top candidates for COY?

Fifteen candidates for National Coach of the Year

Any list for National Coach of the year that does not include Jamie Dixon is just plain wrong.  He has lost not one but two NBS prospects and is on track to win 21+ games.  Unbelievable job.  And I am a Duke fan!

I'm pretty sure that Coach K has a little bit of skill in the recruiting process (isn't that part of being a coach of the year?).  And you can quote me in saying that Notre Dame is overrated.  I can't wait for an early exit come tournament time.

I'm a Duke fan and I have to say that Bo Ryan has done an amazing job this year with his team.  We all know that Bo Ryan always manages to get it done with home games, but this year he's accomplishing some big Ws away (something not very easy to do when you lose a stud like Alando Tucker).  But, once again I'm going to have to be curious as to how far they go in the big dance - they don't usually have the reputation of going deep.  And, as a fan of ACC ball, I'm going to take a shot at the Big Ten for basketball - they aren't really proving to be as notable as they once were (which is why the ACC crushed them once again in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge.

I bet you wouldn't be hatin' on Pearl if he coached your team to our record!  Hey you don't have to like his style (though the UT fans do) but even you have to admit what he's done at UT in such a short time is nothing short of amazing.  I say if he finished well in the NCAA tourney he has every reason to be COY!

Michigan is one of thoss team who don`t have to rebuild just reload, but I think if R Rod takes them to the Rose Bowl and wins he should get coach of the year

Vols,

I'll concede your point there. Pearl has done a great job over his time there of building the program. IF the COY is a cumlative award, meaning you look at a body of work longer than just one year, then ok. Pearl should be very seriously looked at for COY. I think the problem we all have is that no one really knows or understands what the criteria are for COY candidates. Is it a one year record, building of a program; graduating players or what. Just some things that if we knew, it would help the discussions/debates be more on point.
