I like you Texas (but you blew it)

Texas cost itself the top ranking.

I feel like I should tell you that now.

I spent part of Saturday morning crunching numbers, looking at every bit of information available. I came to the conclusion that if Texas won at Texas Tech I'd move the Longhorns to No. 1 in Sunday night's Top 25 (and one) based mostly around the facts that they had won eight consecutive games and comprised a list of victims (Tennessee, UCLA and Kansas) that no other elite team can match.

And then guess what happened?

Texas lost.

To a Texas Tech team that spent Wednesday losing to Texas A&M by 44 points. And that's a Texas A&M team that spent Saturday losing by 27 points to Oklahoma. And that's an Oklahoma team that spent Wednesday losing by 18 points to Nebraska. And that's a Nebraska team that spent Saturday losing by 14 points to Oklahoma State. And that's an Oklahoma State team that has endured a six-game losing streak this season.

So yeah, things are now a mess.

Should I put North Carolina No. 1 even though its top win is against Clemson?

Or should I put Memphis No. 1 even though it just lost at home to Tennessee?

Or should I put Tennessee No. 1 even though it just lost at Vanderbilt?

Or should I put UCLA No. 1 if it wins at Arizona on Sunday?

At this point, I'm not sure.

I'll figure it out in the next 20 hours, I guess.

But I would've had Texas No. 1 if it won at Texas Tech on Saturday.

I feel like I should tell you that now.

I think Texas went there and took a game off until the last 3 minutes of the game. But to say Tech isn't any good is crazy. I think the Big 12 is a great conference this year. It is easy to lose one when you play one of them at home. Just look at Texas and Kansas' losses. That being said. TEXAS IS GOING ALL THE WAY! Down them all you want, but look who they have beaten this year. Kansas, UCLA and Tennessee. Nuff said.

Gary,

It has to be Memphis with just 1 lost. The is some reason UNC feels that should that they should be annointed #1. Screw that  there is nothing that great of difference between about 6 teams this year!

Yeah halo, I read your post and here it is.

Memphis should be #1 .......North Carolina's only win against a top 25 team was Kent St. .......and they wont even be able to claim that on monday because, Kent State just lost this week LOL......... I dont think I would put North Carolina #1 over Memphis when by Monday.....North Carolina will have ZERO wins over a currently ranked team......lemme repeat......ZERO WINS OVER A RANKED TEAM

It says nothing about your comment being restricted to the AP Poll. If you're ranked in either, you're ranked, it's that simple. You can type all the caps you like and it wont make your post accurate.

Did you read any of my earlier posts? As bigcheese said, you don't have monday's rankings. UNC will probably have 3, and up to 5. Making the "score" 3-3. Your main, and pretty much only point so far has been that UNC has zero wins against top 25 opponents. As for your other points, Memphis' RPI is 2, but UNC is actually 3, and Memphis is leading UNC by only .0006. If Memphis lost Derrick Rose or Chris-Douglas they would be losing by double-digits to the teams UNC has been beating since losing Lawson. UNC also has a harder strength of schedule. Considering how close 2'nd place in the AP poll was last week, and Tennessee's loss, UNC probably will be #1. Memphis is a great team, and I hope that they play UNC in the tournament, but for now, the heels are the better team.

i'm not even trying to debate as to who is better.....thats something that cant be prooven untill they played each other....but, i can go by numbers......i'm just exposing the ignorant people on here that say UNC should no doubt be ranked #1 come Monday.......there is doubt....and there is a lot of it....

It's not a matter of moving one in front of the other.  Carolina is #2 in one poll and #3 in the other.  The people who were in front of them in the silly polls lost, UNC moves up.  It's just a poll, and it doesn't matter.  I'll still take UNC's players (and Hall of Fame Coach) against any of those other teams and say Carolina is the better team; we'll find out as this month progresses.  Just the fact that this debate is even going on suggests that a good many of the people who follow the sport are thinking just about the same way I am (and some others are, no doubt, going to agree with you).  I'm no Memphis fan, but if they win the whole thing I'll be the first to admit I was wrong about them.

Lets compare Facts. On Monday, UNC will have ZERO wins agaisnt top 25 opponents. Memphis will have 3

I don't know where you're from, perhaps the Bush administration, but facts don't predate reality. Do you have a copy of tomorrow's AP Poll that you're reading from? Because with teams falling out of the polls, there's no reason to think Clemson or Davidson won't be ranked. Miami, might be, too.

As for other opponents: Kentucky is 4 points away from having gotten into tomorrow's poll and probably the NCAAs, Ohio State is one of those incessant bubble teams that they're always talking about, and Valpo, Kent State, UNC-Asheville, UCSB, Nevada, Old Dominion, and BYU should be in the tournament or on the bubble, as well as Clemson, Miami, and perhaps Maryland. They should beat Duke on Saturday and complete a perfect road record, and no matter who they have played, there will be one undeniable element: they have a 27-2 record now. If they win out this week, that will be up to 29-2, I don't know how much better you can do, because it's not too realistic to think you can go undefeated in a conference like the ACC. (And they could have as many as 12 wins against NCAA tournament teams.) Even the 2005 team went into the ACC Tournament with 3 losses on the year. UCLA just pulled out a good win against Arizona, but they still have more losses, including one to a dreadful Washington team. Memphis is king of powerless Conference USA and when on the main stage fell on their faces. And again, where is Joey Dorsey?  For a guy jawing with players at the foul line, he needs to work on putting points on the board, instead of trash talking.  And Memphis as a whole has got to learn to make those damn free throws. Tennessee, again, they just lost to a Vandy team that couldn't survive the Razorbacks, and their stay atop the top should come to an end.

I dont believe in good losses, but this one was a wake up to my beloved Longhorns.  Texas can win it all and losing to Tech showed them that you need to bring it every night no matter who you are playing.  They have two game to go and the Big Twelve Post season play begins.  If all goes well Texas should win regular season title with a tie breaker over Kansas, but look for Texas and Kansas to meet in the Big Twelve  Post season Championship game.
