Doubting Kentucky can make a man look stupid

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Congratulations, Kentucky Wildcats.

You will be included in the next Projecting the Field when I update late Sunday/early Monday, and let me go ahead and apologize for being among the last to come around and reward you for your turnaround. I doubted you for a while because I couldn't get past how terrible you were in November, December and early January. Then you got better. But I still doubted you because your best player (Patrick Patterson) went down with a season-ending injury. That was reasonable of me, I think. But even if you disagree it doesn't matter anymore, because the way you've responded minus Patterson has been convincing enough to ensure we are now in total agreement, that playing Tennessee tight before winning at South Carolina and beating Florida to improve to 18-11 overall and -- this is the important part -- 12-4 in the SEC is sufficient for inclusion to the NCAA tournament.

Honestly, I'm not sure how you got this thing turned around.

But make no mistake, you got this thing turned around.

So congratulations, Kentucky Wildcats.

Ashley Judd should be proud.

Doubting Kentucky can make a man look stupid

correction: kentucky didn't beat up on the bottom feeders, Kentucky holds wins over Tennessee, Vandy, Arkansas, and Ole Miss.

For all those that say UK is on the bubble, there are looney bins with rooms still open. Kentucky has 12 wins in the SEC, SORRY to burst YOUR little bubble of hop

Doubting Kentucky can make a man look stupid

Im not a Syracuse fan or a Big East fan or an SEC hater, but does this year's kentucky team remind anybody of last year's Syracuse squad? Awful early season, nonconference play, then beating up on the bottom feeders of their conference. If Syracuse last year didn't make the field, does Kentucky really deserve it? Again, im just asking this as an interested, unbiased observer of college basketball.

Doubting Kentucky can make a man look stupid

So how many teams are we talking from the Big East?  Could we actually see 8 teams?

My impression is, if Syracuse beats Villanova in the 8-9 game, the Orange are in.  If they lose, it's dicey.  But if Villanova wins, how much farther will they need to go to earn a bid?  Would beating Georgetown in the quarterfinals be enough, or would they need to make the final?  I would think a win over Georgetown followed by a loss to Connecticut or West Virginia would leave the Wildcats OK, but if Providence sneaks in there I just don't know.

I did the same thing; I kept telling people how they had no shot to win the games they needed to win.  I also overestimated Florida all year, and so I thought the Gators would come out on top yesterday and they would be the team everyone was wrong about.  I think those of us who doubted Kentucky are not alone.  Just when we were starting to come around the first time, they lost one of their best players to injury.  A lot of teams have seen what that can do.  (Pittsburgh, Syracuse, Louisville, and Providence come to my mind because I follow the Big East most closely).  Congratulations, Kentucky!

Rebel,

I think the Ole Miss vs Ky game will be the SEC's play in game for an at large bid to the Big Dance, assuming Ole Miss can get by Georgia, which they should easily do.

Look to the conference tournaments for some surprises.
