RALEIGH, N.C. -- Congratulations, Kentucky Wildcats.

You will be included in the next Projecting the Field when I update late Sunday/early Monday, and let me go ahead and apologize for being among the last to come around and reward you for your turnaround. I doubted you for a while because I couldn't get past how terrible you were in November, December and early January. Then you got better. But I still doubted you because your best player (Patrick Patterson) went down with a season-ending injury. That was reasonable of me, I think. But even if you disagree it doesn't matter anymore, because the way you've responded minus Patterson has been convincing enough to ensure we are now in total agreement, that playing Tennessee tight before winning at South Carolina and beating Florida to improve to 18-11 overall and -- this is the important part -- 12-4 in the SEC is sufficient for inclusion to the NCAA tournament.

Honestly, I'm not sure how you got this thing turned around.

But make no mistake, you got this thing turned around.

So congratulations, Kentucky Wildcats.

Ashley Judd should be proud.

Gary what seed would you project Kentucky to get? And being that the selection comitee likes interesting matchups is there any team that they could be seeded against to play that would make for an interesting story?

Strength of conference is one of the considerations of the selection committee.  If any of the bubble teams of the SEC played in the Big East or the PAC10, their records would be below .500.

Very very proud UK grad today.  Being a pessimist I couldn't believe that the cats would have this kind of a chance back in December, but I will gladly open mouth-insert foot.  I would really like to see more value put on the conference/recent record of teams vying for inclusion in the tournament (sorry, but .500 in the Big East and Pac-10 doesn't impress me).

True Blue,

The bubble will burst for any of those teams if Butler, S. Alabama or VCU lose in their conference tournaments.  One win in a conference tournament will not insure a bubble team a spot in the dance; however, a loss to a team you should defeat is never a good thing. Ky will face the winner of Georgia and Ole Miss on Friday.  If they win that game then i would say they are solidly in the field.  It's way too early to say that any bubble team is in the field, that is why Parrish's brackets are constantly changing.  As of now Ky is in, but that could change, they have more work to do.

The game to watch is Butler v Cleveland St on Tuesday.  Cleve St has already beaten Butler once this year and played them very close at Butler before losing by 5 points.  If State wins on Tuesday the bubble will burst for someone.

As for C.M. Newton, I consider him to have been one of the best coaches in the SEC, and did a marvelous job of rebuilding the Kentucky program following the Eddie Sutton era.  He's definitely one of my heroes!

Let the Madness Begin----Watch those conference tournaments and rev up those brackets!

I never said that Kentucky wouldn't make the tourney.

You just said that Syracuse was going to the NIT and that's not true.

dek,

In general I agree but UK is so far ahead of the other teams over a 16 game span, they won't take them over UK based upon 1 game in the SEC tourney.  CM Newton was interviewed yesterday, his comment was that all four SEC teams had work to do but if UK beat UF, they are in.  That is the work they had to do.  He also said that if they lost that game they needed one in the SEC tourney to get in but either or got them in.

Now, I think given the fact that the he ran the committee for several years, I would say his opinion is pretty solid.

I agree to disagree though,

Go Cats!!!!
