Syracuse-Villanova is an elimination game

Posted on: March 12, 2008 3:21 am

Here's what I know about Syracuse-Villanova: The loser has no shot at the NCAA tournament.

Does that mean the winner is in?

Not definitely.

That'll probably hinge on which team wins -- because I believe Syracuse (currently in my field) is in slightly better shape than Villanova (currently out of my field) heading into tip-off of Wednesday's first round game of the Big East Tournament -- and how that team then performs against Georgetown in Thursday's quarterfinals. Will a subsequent win over Georgetown be necessary to make the NCAA tournament? Not necessarily. But it wouldn't hurt. And a bad loss could be devastating. And seriously, what's better than this?

Two power programs from a power league are tipping-off at noon ET in what is essentially an elimination game for the NCAA tournament, and when it's over either Jim Boeheim or Jay Wright will make plans for the NIT. That's not a bad way to get the major conference tournaments started. So if you can take a long lunch break you might be wise to do it.

How's that gonna work.     Make Ohio State play a Villanova for the play in and wham all of a sudden a number one seed gets that for its first round.     Gotta be two weak teams in the play in.    We've fallen in love with the mid-majors and small conferences to the point of absurdity.     Lower end major conference team scan win the national championship  e.g. Villanova in 86.  Mid major sweethearts can't.

Isn't this about finding a national champion.  Or is it just to have a homey let everyone in tournament.   I'm bored of too many power conference teams too but until someoen from the A-10 wins the whole enchilada let's get real.

Syracuse-Villanova is an elimination game

Nova just destroyed Syracuse by 19 points and the Orangemen have only won 3 of their last 9.  Depending on Nova's RPI, Syracuse is potentially 2-8 versus top 50 RPI teams.   I guess I will be seeing the Orangemen go to the NIT.

Syracuse-Villanova is an elimination game

So Villanova just won to set up a rematch of the close loss they suffered only weeks ago to Georgetown. That will make the game a bit more interesting. With Syracuse out and a weak bubble, hopefully the NCAA will take this opportunity to look harder at some deserving mid-majors.

Also, does anyone else feel that it's unwarranted to make two conference champs compete in the play in game? Every year two conference champs from arguably the weakest conferences are forced to compete in one added game to get to the field of 64. Make two of the last four in bubble teams play that game. Sure, it's for the lowest 16th seed, and likely they have ridiculously weak schedules compared to the major conferences, but all the NCAA asked mid-majors of Div. 1 to do was win their conference and they're in, and they did so. Don't make them play-in. Make a bubble team whose only qualifier is a somewhat decent schedule play in.

Syracuse-Villanova is an elimination game

All that effort this season to go out in the second half to a potential game that would of put us in the NCAA tournament and act lazy.

Syracuse-Villanova is an elimination game

Look out for the Cuse in 2009.  They should be a top 15 team without question.  They battled all year with an extremely young team playing a lot of minutes.

Syracuse-Villanova is an elimination game

I totally agree, even more now that I seen the score...  Syracuse has fallen off the map and are headed to the NIT (Not In Tournament)...  From my recollection, I don't think they have made any noise in the NCAA since Mellow brought them a National Title...  It's definitely not coaching, Jim Boeheim is a masterful, legendary coach...  I think it has to do with going after the one and done player...  Sure the one and done player Boeheim got won him a title...  But in the long run is it a good idea for the overall team...  Look at last years one and done (Greg Odon)...  his team fell off and I do not see them recovering anytime soon...  This years for sure one and done (OJ Mayo) hasn't done anything special at USC, just score, hes good but the team is still the same as they were the last couple of years, (4th or 5th in conference)...  Just a thought...

Go Bruins!!!
