Come on, Barack! Did you forget your platform?

Posted on: March 20, 2008 6:09 pm

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- I'm a little disappointed in Barack Obama's pick to win the national championship.

North Carolina?

Sure, it makes sense.

But does it really represent Obama and all for which he stands?

I don't think so considering the presidential hopeful has wowed voters in recent months by acknowledging the fact that he is an "unconventional" candidate. He's been asking people to embrace it while shunning conventional wisdom, and it's working brilliantly. But when it was time for Obama to practice what he pounds, the democrat caved and went with UNC, meaning he sided with the establishment, with old reliable, with the comfortable pick.

My opinion: Obama should've gone outside the power structure (i.e., the BCS-affiliated leagues).

Because an unconventional candidate should have an unconventional pick.

How about Xavier?

Or Memphis?

Or Gonzaga?

Any of those would've worked, I think. But if Obama just had to go with a BCS-affiliated program then the pick should've obviously been Stanford -- an academic school led by a set of twins (Brook and Robin Lopez) from a white mother and black father. It's perfect given how Obama comes from a white mother and black father, too. It would've sent a message about how those from unconventional backgrounds can achieve greatness. But nooooooooooooo. Mr. Unconventonal had to go conventional with his bracket. And if his campaign subsequently comes undone he'll only have himself to blame.

Come on, Barack! Did you forget your platform?

Hello to Mr. Marty Grunder, from somewhere unfortunate to have him in Southern Ohio:

You, sir, are a despicable human. You probably don't know what that word means, do you? Considering the intelligence you just exhibited in your post, I will rephrase: you are a bad, bad man; a stoopid stoopid man. Yes, I'm being condescending because you deserve it you racist bag of

lets just do this bit by bit:

"Barack Obama is not only unfit to make a NCAA prediction he is a complete half breed with no business running for President."

First, its ludicrous to try and say someone is unfit to make an NCAA prediction. Let's leave that alone though, and focus on calling someone a "half-breed". I guarantee you 100%, Mr. Grunder, you are much more than a "half-breed." If you want to take something as stupid as "race" and "ethnicity" into account, you should look in your history and see what kind of "cross-breeding" occurred in your family between say, irish, scottish, german immigrants, british, french colonists. As much as you may love to think, you did not spring from the ground of America.

"I am racist, as EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE WORLD IS, in one way or another. You can pretend to hide behind a false wall and say your are not but YOU ARE."

That's just frickin ridiculous. I hope you have no children because anyone growing up learning that is only living in and breeding hate. as with the well-put statement by kansasjayrobb (props), "love thy neighbor" is stated clearly in the Bible, the Torah, the Qu'ran and countless other spiritual, cultural and religious documents from every country, regardless of their color. You are a classic example of someone who preaches Christianity but sins constantly in your hate.

"I dont care that he is only half black, he is BLACK. If elected he would most certainly be executed."

First, you mean "assassinated." Like Kennedy, Lincoln and McKinley (by WHITE dudes). The only reason anyone would have reason to do such a disgusting act would be because of a blind, dumb view on a person due to their skin color. Do you have the intellectual capacity to understand his policies? If not, maybe you should ask someone to put it in layman's terms... he wishes to reverse the systematic exploitation, fear-mongering and ethical crimes the current administration has committed. He wishes to restore your status as a moral beacon of freedom, which has been extinguished and replaced with an iron fist of neo-imperialism.

"Can you imagine the worlds powers trying to sit down with this crap talker. I can see that little punk that runs Iran having a field day with him."

First of all, consider that Obama is the ONLY one willing to even TALK to Iran, the rest of the candidates want to continue the Hadley Rules of just ignoring them because Bush labelled them an "ideological enemy" because he is against their religion (probably because he was raised in a similar, "hateful of what you don't understand" fashion to you!). And if you truly want to discuss his skin color, then I wholly believe he is FAR more suited to deal with a foreign country's leader than Mr. Bush, a white man who had not even left his state before he became President, and thus has no clue about the world. Mr. Obama has travelled and lived across the world and understands that different cultures are just that, different, not wrong. I think a travelled, intelligent man with a proper idea of what it is to be a minority and to be looked down upon by terrible individuals such as yourself is more suited to fix the problems created by a man who has been looking down and attempting to oppress the types of people in these foreign countries.

Sorry to ramble off about something but you make me sick to my stomach.

Mr. Parrish, great little article it gave me a nice chuckle, especially the "but nooooooooo" part, and the immediate assumption that this would destroy his campaign. The only thing that made me laugh harder was all of these comments taking it seriously. By the way, post your bracket, I know people want to compare their picks to the experts. Not to say that the madness is in any way predictable for anyone.

Or Xavier or Memphis... blah blah blah b.s.!

UNC isn't a cop out.  I don't know if you've notice but almost EVERY SINGLE espn or cbs person has predicted Kansas or, even more popular UCLA.  UNC is the pick to show up and lose.  I feel as though nobody else has noticed that UNC, of the three, has the fewest losses.

You know what? I think Parrish is right for once.

Remember when Hurricane Katrina hit? And the year after that, the NEW ORLEANS SAINTS made it to the NFC championship game against DA BEARS? Who did Obama pick then, all you liberal loonies?

DA BEARS!! Not the Saints, which would have been the better choice, considering they had just gone through a tragic situation, and they would have fir with his campaign rationale better anyways. Just goes to show ... he's a silver-tongued, but highly predictable politician. Always going for the popular pick.

Also, Parrish ... you should have also added that the ONLY reason Obama pick UNC and Pitt to be in the Final Four was because of the upcoming primaries in North Carolina and Pennsylvania. No one can sit here and COMPETENTLY argue that the primaries weren't a significant factor in his "choice." I dare any of you.

Come on, Barack! Did you forget your platform?

Based on many of the comments so far, this is my take on the state of our country and its intelligence. First off, Gary, you have to understand that when you write a tongue-in-cheek column, many of the readers apparently cannot comprehend the words you use, let alone understand that this is a sarcastic column. Why do you think that, after all of these years, some people still stumble across an article written by The Onion and take it as fact? Why do you think that in 2004, this country elected a president not based on what would be better for the economy, foreign and domestic relations, health care, and other immensely important issues? Instead, according to polling that asked what the #1 issue was, Bush was elected to a second term based on morality. Really? Morality? I guess if ignoring the Geneva Conventions makes one morale, then Bush should be the next Pope. Now, this is indeed a sports site, and politics may not have it's place here, but the reaction to your column should be alarming to those in this country who are intelligent, level headed, and thoughtful. Make no mistake, I love my country. My parents moved here for the opportunity to have freedom, and that fact was never lost on me. However, as has been said before, if you truly love this land, you should speak up and attempt to change the things that are wrong, instead of blindly following a current administration that has destroyed all the progress we made economically and globally during the 90s. There are so many people in this country with a good head on their shoulders, that it is depressing when I see some of these comments. I will get off my soapbox, but before I do...

to the racist vermon who posted an earlier comment, The Bible, which I am sure you also attempt to follow blindly (as most racist rednecks do), states that you should love your fellow man. It is people like you that makes the rest of the world hate us. Say hello to Hitler, Saddam Hussein and Jerry Falwell in hell. For you, I will leave with this quote:

"A mind cannot properly function if the heart is full of hate."

Chill out dudes. Not everything every politician does has to be about politics. I think you all are the ones who are stuck in conventialism. Maybe Barack was being unconvential by picking the team HE ACTUALLY THINKS IS GOING TO WIN THE TOURNAMENT rather than some political statement. I mean come on, UNC is a fantastic team. Can you really blame him for picking them?
