Those 100-point games don't guarantee much

CHARLOTTE -- My pal Andy Demetra is always researching and looking at numbers. While doing so this week he discovered something interesting related to North Carolina.

As you probably know, the Tar Heels scored 113 points in a first-round win against Saint Mary's and 108 in a second-round win against Arkansas. Sounds great, right? But from a historical standpoint this does not ensure future dominance considering that since the field expanded to 64 in 1985 none of the five other teams that have scored 100 in back-to-back NCAA tournament games have gone on to win the national title.

Here's the list ...

1987: North Carolina (lost in the Elite Eight)
1988: Oklahoma (lost in the title game)
1989: Virginia (lost in the Elite Eight)
1990: Loyola Marymount (lost in the Elite Eight)
1993: Kentucky (lost in the Final Four)

The last team to actually score 100 points in back-to-back NCAA tournament games and win the national title was the 1965 version of the UCLA Bruins, according to Andy. Either way, don't expect UNC to score 100 against Washington State in the Sweet 16. The most points the Cougars have allowed to anybody this season is 81 to UCLA on Jan. 12.

How can you say he hates UNC, by the way the last two weeks have looked on sportsline, I would think he played for the Tar Heels.

Why can't Parrish just admit he doesn't like UNC and leave it at that.  If you start out at the beginning preaching, "I bet (fill in the blank) doesn't win the national title," you'll probably be right almost all the time.  Aren't there 342 division I teams at the start?  I guess you have to get a little bit more nervous when (fill in the blank) is only three wins away from being crowned...

I bet UCLA doesn't have any ax-murderers on their starting five.  See, you can predict almost anything and be right!

You are exactly right, Venom.  No way UNC scores 100 against the plodding Cougars.  But, they will probably still win.  Gary Parrish needs more ideas, since saying "100 points in one (or two) game(s) doesn't mean you'll win all the rest of the games is so crazy stupid, it's like saying "You ate eggs for breakfast, but I'll bet you don't eat them for lunch AND dinner!"  I mean, Gary: you do realize that every game is different, right?  I think you do.  So why are you trying to SHOCK and AMAZE us by "revealing" that you have this inkling, this weird hunch, that every game is (gasp!) different?

It would be a shock to me if UNC scores 100 or more against Washington State.WSU is a team that plays great defense, but if UNC can control the pace of the game we may see another blowout.
