Las Vegas is not impressed with Davidson

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- If the four favorites win in the Elite Eight it'll be the first time all four No. 1 seeds have advanced to the Final Four.

For what it's worth, Las Vegas thinks it's going to happen.

No. 1 UCLA is a 6.5-point favorite over No. 3 Xavier.

No. 1 North Carolina is a 6-point favorite over No. 3 Louisville.

No. 1 Memphis is a 3-point favorite over No. 2 Texas.

No. 1 Kansas is a 9.5-point favorite over No. 10 Davidson.

So oddsmakers either love Kansas (which is reasonable) or they still aren't impressed with Davidson (which is unreasonable). Regardless, whatever transpires in Detroit will be a fabulous story given how there are only two options -- one that includes Bill Self making his first Final Four and another that has Davidson pulling a George Mason.

Las Vegas is not impressed with Davidson

Well, it did happen so I guess the selection committee was on top of its game this year. Of course it's a lot more fun when you get the surprise teams crashing the party. Davidson made a great run and their fans will be talking about it for years.

I think he gave the odds to provide information about who the majority of the betting population think will win the matches and thus make the Final Four. It is therefore providing the most objective opinion of who will win the matches, which should be of interest to any college bball fan. Read James Surowiecki's (sp?) The Wisdom of Crowds if you don't believe me.

In no way is it promoting gambling - if someone wants to gamble, they will do it for other reasons than seeing the odds published

CBS should not be promoting sports gambling.  Betting on basketball has caused a lot of ills to the sport and threatens the integrity of the game.  Nothing good can come from this column.  Focus on the great play we have seen in this years Tournament, not giving the gambling odds.  The NCAA cant be too happy with this.

I guess it is always going to be this way until a mid major program wins a national title.I would love to see Davidson do just that!

Obviously the odds-makers just compared the numbers, and saw that Kansas is better in every aspect of the game than Davidson. I agree lets enjoy the run because it helps the cause of all "mid-majors" in the future. Lets just hope they don't win so they can get beat by 30 by UNC. Look forward to that Roy Williams Vs. Kansas matchup that old Roy has so enjoyed avoiding the last four years.

Why are we even discussing this? Shouldn't we be focusing on Davidson's amazing story and anylayze the games rather than look at what some crackpot bookies think will happen? Let's embrace the spirit of student-athlete competition that can only be in college and high school atheltics. You will very rarely see that kind of team pride and passion in any pro leauge.

I find the odds interesting in that they give you a better idea how likely an upset is to occur. I had thought that Texas had the best chance of the four among the four opponents of no. 1 seeds, and the odds-makers bear that out. It's another way of looking at the match-up, both as to the strength of the favorite and the strength of the underdog. And, by the way, I pick Texas over Memphis. I think the next most likely upset is Xavier over UCLA. North Carolina looks unbeatable, but, then again, so does Kansas. It's a good thing for the other side of the bracket that North Carolina and Kansas have to play each other to reach the finals, or it would be a UNC-Kansas final.<style id="jajah" type="text/css">span.jajahWrapper { font-size:1em; color:#B11196; text-decoration:underline; } a.jajahLink { color:#000000; text-decoration:none; } span.jajahInLink:hover { background-color:#B11196; }</style>

Las Vegas always puts their money on the #1 seeds. Don't take it too personal either Gary, they have the lower seeds given point spreads even lower. Oviously Davidson will not get any respect.
