The final figures are in: Kentucky led the nation in attendance this season. Again. It marks the 12th time in 13 years that the Wildcats have led in attendance, a statistic that demonstrates how UK has the most committed fans in the country ... and a really big home arena.

Kentucky averaged 22,554 fans to top the list by more than 2,000 people per game.

Interestingly, three of the top eight schools are from the SEC.

The entire Top 10 is below:

1. Kentucky (22,554)

2. North Carolina (20,497)

3. Syracuse (20,345)

4. Tennessee (20,267)

5. Louisville (19,481)

6. Maryland (17,950)

7. Wisconsin (17,190)

8. Arkansas (17,148)

9. Indiana (16,876)

10. Memphis (16,748)

If you consider a top 10 in attendance over the past 3 years, you would NOT find Tennessee on it. Thompson Bowling Arena echoed with 5,000 fans or less in average attendance prior to last season. Your attendance stats make educated college basketball fans wanna puke!!! So, quit whinning about how amazing the SEC is already and stick to something the SEC knows a little about dominating...like headlines for arrested current AND former players!!! How many SEC teams made it out of the sweet 16 last year? Can you say ZERO, ZILCH, NONE, and NADDA ONE?

Average attendance divided by arena capacity data for the top 10 teams listed.  I will preface the data by saying that the numbers that are over 100% (for UL and Wisconsin) might be due to old seating data on the websites, or inaccurate ticket reporting.  I've been to games at Freedom Hall in Louisville, and I know they sell out most of their conference games, but, like just about every other team in the nation, they are a couple thousand short of capacity when the small, cruddy teams come to town.  I will surmise the same is true for Wisconsin, leading me to believe those numbers above 100% have to be inaccurate.  I don't believe Maryland's number either, it is very suspicious that their "average" attendance is the EXACT same number as their arena's seating capacity.  Makes me doubt their numbers. (I provided links to where I got the seating info, since several of these have had renovations and not all sites are well updated)

UK (98.1% full)

UNC (94.2% full)

Syracuse (61.7%)

UT (96.5%)

UL (103.9%)

Maryland (100%)

Wisconsin (100.3%)

Arkansas (89.3%)

IU (96.7%)

Memphis (92.9%)

Interesting list, tells us which teams have large arenas.  Doesn't say a lot about who has the most committed fans, other than that the schools on the list don't have problems getting plenty of fans to their games.  Every attendance listed is larger than the maximum capacity (16,300) of Allen Fieldhouse, where the 2008 national champion Kansas Jayhawks play their home games.  Another list to show would be number of sell-outs, or average attendance divided by arena capacity.  This still might not really capture the "atmosphere".  Give me a place where fans will cram their way into an arena an hour and a half before game time to run to the best available seat on a hard wooden bench over these flat, NBA style arenas with cushy chairs and drink holders, and fans sitting on their hands

I cant deny that basketball is huge in KY, but how about the job that Bruce Pearl has done at Tennessee!  Before he came to Knoxville they were lucky to get 6-8 thousand a game for men's basketball!  They were regularly out-drawn by the women's program!
