Binghamton player uninterested in going to trial

Miladin Kovacevic has pulled a Roman Polanski.

Or something like that.

You might remember me mentioning Kovacevic in a blog last month. He's the Binghamton basketball player who was jailed and charged with felony assault after an April 30 attack at a bar left  a man named Bryan Steinhauer in a coma. It's a sad story that has now turned strange. The guys at the America Least blog sent a note today informing me that Kovacevic was released from jail when his parents posted a $100,000 cash bond last week. Now, police have told a Binghamton newspaper they believe Kovacevic and his parents have fled to their native Serbia to escape the charges.

Meantime, Steinhauer remains hospitalized and unconscious.

Like I said, it's a sad and strange story.

Binghamton player uninterested in going to trial

you can follow the details of this in the local newspaper  (pressconnects.com) but of interest:

Kovacevic's bail was paid by a vice consul from the Serbian Consulate General's Office, who is now on vacation and unavailable for comment.

The consulate also provided him with a  temporary passport, since he had to surrender his locally.

And what extraordinary means did he use to escape the US in this post-9/11 world .. umm .. flew out of newark to germany.

The local politicians are now ratling sabres, we have an extradition treaty with Serbia, but most expect he is long gone never to be returned to face justice.

I am pretty sure assault is illegal in almost every country, if not every country.  No need to make this an illegal immigration issue.  Still pretty sad though.
