Jay Wright is gonna be pissed

Temple's Fran Dunphy is the best college coach in the Philadelphia area, according to the Best of Philadelphia section of this month's Philadelphia Magazine.

(That's the first time I've ever used the word Philadelphia three times in one sentence, just so you know.)

“I am honored that the magazine chose me as there are so many quality college coaches in the Philadelphia area,” Dunphy said in a statement, and then he flipped the bird to Jay Wright and Bruiser Flint. OK, I made that last part up. But in all seriousness, this is a pretty neat honor for the third-year coach of the Owls and clearly the result of him leading Temple to the NCAA tournament last season despite being picked ninth in the Atlantic 10.

Still, I must warn Fran.

This stuff can come and go quickly.

Last year I was voted "Best Hair in Memphis" by Memphis Sport Magazine, and if you look at my picture you can see why. This year, however, it was a totally different story. I lost to some guy named John Calipari and didn't even place in the top five -- though I must admit I became complacent after winning in 2007 and stopped aspiring for hair-greatness, making my dropoff something less than a surprise.

There's always next year, though.

Why would Dunphy regret leaving Penn for Temple?  Yes he needed to win the A-10 tourney the last 2 years, but he did in fact win the A-10 tournament 2 years in a row.  Yes Christmas is gone, but overall the team is much deeper than it has been for years, and it is in fact the first year that all the players will be Dunphy recruits (with the exception of Guzman).  Dunphy basically inherited a shell of a team from Chaney on which Christmas spent most of his time on the bench for some reason.

In spite of what all the "experts" predict (remembering that Temple was predicted to finish 9th in the A-10 the last 2 years), this team should be solid this year and has a chance to return to the dance for years to come.  There might not be one main scoring threat but the team should have much more scoring balance and be harder to defend against.

Bruiser's a great guy and is having sucess at Drexel, but was not quite so sucessful at UMASS.  Dunphy is a significantly better coach in my opinion.  As for Martelli, he used to out-coach Chaney but hasn't been quite as sucessful against Temple since Dunphy took over at Temple.  Although he doesn't draw from the "National talent pool" ( only Jay Wright has that luxury), he did have a couple of guys name Jameer Nelson and Delonte West.  He hasn't coached quite as well since their departure.

However, all that being said I think all of the Big 5 coaches, with the eception of the guy at Penn could lay claim to this award, but none of them can claim the honor hands down.

The author is correct that Wright is far from the bast   game coach in Philly. If Nova has a weakness it is his in ablity to make adjustments during the game. He comes on to the court well prepaired, but often is badlt oputcoached during actual play

Martelli is the best coach hands down in Philly. He simply does not have the national talent poool  which Wright pulls from. St Joe would be a scary team if he did.

Fran and Bruiser are fairly close as coaches. One has to wonder if Fran now regrets leaving Penn to  try and take a step  up at Temple. Yes he has made the Field  two years in a row, but both times he needed to win the A -10 Tounement to do so. With Cristmas gone, and no "stud" recriuts oin the horizon, Temple will fall back to  earht  next year.

La Salle is making some nice inroads in restoring thae once proud program, and actually landed one of the top  3 centers in the country who will be polaying this coming fall. The Expoloers  could be  a wild card in the A -10 along with a vastly improving Duquane program.

Penn  all but burried itself  when they hired Frans replacement from the hoops powerhouse at Brown , where he had a losing record. What could they  have been thinking??

what about Martelli? He's done more at St. Joe's in his tenure there than these guys have done!
