Will spring ever get here?

Odd thoughts while wondering whatever happend to Eddie Cheever.

It's February 19 and the cold still holds on. My only hope in the cold is that it will use itself up and give way to spring in early March.

Now is the time of the year that I begin focusing my physical training on my umpiring skills. I started my preseason routine two weeks ago. I was so sore that I hobbled around for several days. At 52, I understand that I am just passing my physical/mental peak for umpiring at the level I work at (high school, young adult semi pro and youth levels). I try to stay in good shape, but it is difficult. When you own a restaurant, and you are tempted by all the foods you shouldn't eat, these long, cold wintry days can lead to packing on pounds.

As a huge baseball fan, I continue to be saddened by all the controversy surrounded by the steroid scandal. IMHO, Major League baseball and Bud Selig got what they wanted. They needed the long ball race with Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa to bring the game back after the strike. Thus, they looked the other way while all this was going on. As far as I am concerned, just put all the guys from that era who belong in the Hall of Fame in. That means Clemens, Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, et. al.

It is my fervent hope that my Yankees can return to some level of excellence this year....I am glad that they are finally committing to their farm system and not going after the high priced free agents. Boston has proven that you can sustain excellence that way. You know, it just isn't fair. Here I am, a Colts and Yankees fan. Who are my biggest rivals in both sports? Freaking Bahsten.

Til next time.........Take care

Good call on Eddie Cheever, Neil.....

I have always wanted to learn about Cricket. Perhaps someday. In the mean time, if you ever want to learn the ins and outs of baseball, look me up.

Take care!

Will spring ever get here?

Thanks Dawnie...one of my dreams is to come to Bawston with my oldest son to see a Yanks/Red Sox game. He is a huge Sux fan.

Trust me...if we get to do that in the near future, I'll take you up on the offer.

Definitely a wicked pissah!

Take care.

Unitas,

It will get here and you'll be in shape to go out and enjoy what you do.  I'll send you a copy of my Tae Bo dvd if that helps.  Great thoughts and enjoy your preseason of taunting with the good folks from Boston.

Great blog btw...keep writing.

Hi Unitas

I have to confess as a Brit what I know about Baseball you could print ao a single side of a penny... give me Cricket any day of the week. Spring cannot come quick enough for me but neither can the next football season.  I am looking forward to locking horns with you damn Colts fans again next season but in the meantime enjoy your baseball and I will be nice to you but when the Football season starts again... Look Out!

Unitas - while I'm not a fan of baseball, I'd just like to take a moment to express my sympathies for what you're going through as a fan of the game.  To have a passion for something that you hold in high esteem and see it be marred by the very people that play this game is, to put it mildly, extremely disappointing.  I hope the game that you love is once again viewed through your eyes as what it should be.

And freakin' Bawston is wicked pissa!    If you ever get stomach to take in a Yankees/Red Sox game around here (with a lot of help from Pepto Bismol), I'll volunteer to take you to a fine Eyetalian restaurant, if you're a fan of it.  The best ones are in Providence, not Boston.
