Homecoming for Holmgren?

Mike Holmgren might want to put those retirement plans on hold.

His dream job is open.

The San Francisco 49ers fired coach Mike Nolan Monday after he opened the season 2-5. Mike Singletary will take over as the interim coach.

If Singletary doesn't turn the 49ers around, it's unlikely he keeps the job. That means it's an audition. If the 49ers don't play well, Holmgren, who is leaving the Seahawks after the season, might be the top option.

The personnel people who I talked to who know Singletary say he's a future star in the coaching profession. But some of them wonder if he's ready. During interviews so far he hasn't come across as a man who was fully prepared for the jobs, which is why he didn't get them. Word out of Atlanta was he didn't have a prepared list of possible assistant coaches he would hire, which turned off some in the organization.

Experience can change that. Maybe the final nine games can help mold him. If not, then the 49ers might look to Holmgren, a former assistant under Bill Walsh in the glory days when the 49ers were winning Super Bowls. Holmgren is building his retirement home in the Bay Area, so it makes a lot of sense.

Holmgren says he promised his wife he wouldn't coach in 2009, but this may change that.

I think it just might. My gut says one of the Mikes will be coaching the 49ers next season, whether it's the Hall of Fame linebacker or the Hall of Fame coach.

Homecoming for Holmgren?

I seriously doubt he will end up coaching the 49ers.  I think Singletary would have to put in an even worse coaching performance than Nolan to not be hired at the end of the season.  I think after this year in Seattle Holmgren says screw it I'm retired.  I think he will at least take a year off, because this year has been so frustrating for the Seahawks.  How much does his lame duck status in Seattle effect the play and attention to detail of his team?  I wonder.

Homecoming for Holmgren?

I am no 49ers fan, but I would love to see Singletary keep the gig. I think he would be a great head coach. I would love to see him stare down a player who just screwed up with that intense wide open stare of his linebacker days.

I would doubt it, he has promised that he will not coach next season.  Besides, he would want to go somewhere where he could win soon, and in SF that is not going to happen unless the massively upgrade their QB, WR's, OL, and entire defense.  This team is at least 3 or 4 seasons away from being competitive, that is barring anymore personnel choices like Ashley Lelie and Alex Smith.

I agree with captainkid the franchise has some talent. Fix the QB situation and go from there.

Homecoming for Holmgren?

Holmgren might just consider this over retirement..  Other than QB the 49ers have a decent amount of talent, and who knows, maybe with some experience O'Sullivan is the answer.  With the right coach overseeing Mike Martz, and a couple of key additions on defense, this team could be decent for a few years.  I hope Holmgren accepts the job, if it is offered.  Maybe that will make a team in the NFC west an actual contender.

Homecoming for Holmgren?

The franchise isn't in that bad of a state.  They have a lot of talent, they've drafted well over the past few years, and they're not in a bad cap situation.  QB is their main problem area.  They were supposed to be playoff contenders this year and last year, which is why Nolan's gone now.

Homecoming for Holmgren?

First I am sorry to see Nolan go I liked what he was trying to do. However, I really like seeing Singletary as the new coach! I think the best thing for Holmgren would for him to be the new GM certainly they are not going to keep McCoullough around too? I am excited to see what Singletary can do! Either way GO NINERS!

I'm with ya.  Would love to see Singletary kick some butt, however this team needs a bit more help.

Wonder which coach gets canned next?  Herm Edwards?

Homecoming for Holmgren?

I'm rooting for Singletary.  But Vince Lombardi and Bill Walsh would struggle to win with this group of players.

Homecoming for Holmgren?

Mike Already has one foot out the stadium in Seahawk land. He made the Hawks a contender and the Injuries made them the laughing stock, Mike Good Luck.
