Shanahan the GM does in Shanahan the coach

With the news that Mike Shanahan is out as the Denver Broncos coach, there is a moral to the story, one the New York Jets should pay attention to as they talk to Bill Cowher.

Don't give personnel-decision making powers to the coach.

That doesn't work.

Shanahan the coach was outstanding. Shanahan the personnel man made a ton of mistakes.

He brought in bad people. He brought in bad players.

Shanahan the coach couldn’t overcome that, which is why he was fired.

In a statement sent out by the Broncos, Denver owner Pat Bowlen, "After giving this careful consideration, I have concluded that a change in our football operations is in the best interests of the Denver Broncos. This is certainly a difficult decision, but one that I feel must be made and which will ultimately be in the best interests of all concerned.”

The fall of the power-hungry coaches happens. They want it al, and it can't be done.
Tom Coughlin was a great coach in Jacksonville. He just wasn't as good a personnel guy, which caught up to him. He needed a personnel man to make decisions. Mike Holmgren was a Super Bowl winning coach in Green Bay, but didn't get it done in Seattle when he had total control and was still the coach.

The job is too big now. You can't do both.

Shanahan is still a good coach. He just isn't capable of handling the GM/coach responsibilities.

Nobody can.

The Jets better pay attention to that when they talk to Cowher, who wants it all. Don't give it to him. It will be his undoing as a coach.

Shanahan was a great coach.  He really had a great eye for offensive personnel. Cutler, Royal, Hillis, Marshall, Clady, Larsen. Signing Woodyard was a prime example of knowing young talent. He was truly the best linebacker we had and wasn't given the true opertunity to play the whole season.

For Shanny's replacement, I think John Elway would be a great option. Hall of Fame player who knows the game and definitely knows the Denver system. Get a GM who will spend the money on a defense and a coordinator who knows how to run a defense. Elway would walk into the locker room already with the respect of the players. Can you imagine Cutler playing in an Elway offense? EXPLOSIVE!!

Cowher had a head of football operations Kevin Colbert who filled the role of a GM.  Cowher wasn't the personnel guy in Pittsburgh.  Colbert was, and before Colbert there were other directors of Football Operations who ran the personnel side of the operation.  Do some research before you write something stupid like this you f-king idiot.

Hmmm....Perhaps you are forgetting about Tom Donahoe and Kevin Colbert??? Cowher and Tomlin did/do not have the only say on personnel in the Burgh.

I am somewhat shocked that Shanahan was canned. I felt it was probably time, but did not actually think that it would happen. Sort of like Favre in Green Bay, I thought Shanahan had a lifetime pass, but like Favre things needed to be changed. Hopefully the Broncos make a good choice in his replacement and we do not have a revolving door of coaches until the Broncos get it right.

Who are some replacements you guys see? Certainly I would like to see Cowher and maybe Spagnola out of NY.

One of the greatest in history???? Please!!  He gets way too much credit for the Superbowl wins.....if anyone deserves credit, it's Terrell Davis.  Elway was great, but could never get over the top without him.  Shanny has done nothing since those two departed.  You look at the last several seasons, and the Broncos have done the same thing......jump out to a great start of the season, only to whither down the stretch.  It's because other teams with good coaches have figured out Shanny by the second half of the season, and Shanny's not good enough to adjust.  Myopic Donkey Fans!!

Amen, thanks for the 14 years.  I remember watching true mediocrity with Wade Phillips and Dan Reeves.  Shanny brought a success and pride to the organization that I think will be very difficult for anyone to duplicate.

I met him outside the team's hotel in Kansas City once.  While his players were signing autographs, he wouldn't.  He said, "I won't sign autographs, but I'll shake your hand."  And he did -- all 50-plus of us.  Class act.  Don't kick our rear end too badly when you get to your next gig, Mike.

"Shanahan the GM does in Shanahan the coach"

Wow, I'm a Giants fan and find it shocking that Pat Bowlen would let go of Shanny. If anything he should have given Shanny the option to pursue his GM duties on a fulltime basis rather than can him. There's more to this story than what is being written. There must have been a fall-out between Bowlen and Shanahan. This story is not over. We'll know more soon enough.

I guess that makes Wade Phillips the teflon man. Unbelievable !

Time to stir the pot and start the rumors! Bring on Coach Cowher! And don't forget about the "...if the Dolphins are sold" clause in Parcell's GM contract. He COULD become available for a "reasonable" price. Since his entire $12-million dollar contract with Miami is guaranteed even "if the Dolphins are sold," he has until Jan 31 to decide if he wants to stay in Miami. Cowher AND Parcells...the two-headed genius! Could you guys get along? Could you imagine? Start carving the Rocky Mountain Rushmore around King John's Throne!

Shanahan the GM does in Shanahan the coach

Lions right now should be calling Shanahan before the ink dries on his pink slip, yes I agree no coach should do double duties, as coach and GM.  But he is what the Lions need he has the blue print to winning in the nfl, even when he had teams that noone gave a chance he made into winners. Shoot even this year all they had to do was win that last game and it was playoffs and we arent talking about this. Cause  you know most or not all his staff would come with him , thats key all the coach that have any sucess in this league have a staff that they trust and have been with them for long periods of time.

Thats the problem with the Lions is they get coaches that don't have any experience and don't have any staff that has experience with them, so if they can lure Shanahan into it he has a staff that's complete and know what they are doing and knows what he wants out of his players and team.

So what i'm trying to say in this rant or comment is the Lions need to get off there asses and get him now don't wait around cause there aren't to many out to wait on.
