Prisco Rants: What are the Browns thinking?

What are the Cleveland Browns doing?

Eric Mangini?

He wasn't successful in his three seasons with the New York Jets. Even his good buddy, general manager Mike Tannenbaum, sent him packing because he felt the team needed a change. Or at least he was forced to relieve him of his job and yet the Browns gave him a four-year deal to be their coach Wednesday.

I just think Mangini is too soft of a presence. He plays the tough guy, but he isn't. Does that chubby face look imposing. I don't think he has what it takes to be a successful head coach.

Not only that, the players hated him in New York. Word is his coaches didn't like him.

That's a bad combination: A tough-guy wannabe who isn't well liked. Bill Belichick, the man Mangini copied, has a presence. His players fear him. Bill Parcells' players feared him. Jimmy Johnson's players feared him.

Would you fear Mangini?

There are too many good candidates out there. I think Randy Lerner was snowed by the idea he will be getting another Belichick.

He isn't.

The Browns made a mistake.

Quick hits

  • The Dallas Cowboys landed a heck of a special-team coach in Joe DeCamillis, whose contract expired in Jacksonville. DeCamillis is regarded as one of the top special-teams coaches in the league. There was some friction between DeCamillis and coach Jack Del Rio that helped lead to his departure.
  • It shouldn't come as a shock that Greg Knapp is joining Jim Mora's staff in Seattle. Knapp was the offensive coordinator in Atlanta when Mora was the head coach. Knapp has to be thrilled he doesn't have to deal with a run-around quarterback like Mike Vick. Mora was too loyal to Vick and always defended him, and that was part of his undoing.
  • Georgia quarterback Matt Stafford will enter the NFL Draft as a junior, and he will be a top-10 pick. I used to think Stafford would be the top pick -- he topped my initial draft list -- but I like Oklahoma's Sam Bradford a little more now. I think he's more accurate. But Stafford did the right thing coming out.
  • The Saints confirmed Reggie Bush had micro-fracture surgery on his left knee. That could be trouble for next season, although the Saints don't think it will be. If it is, they have nobody to blame but themselves. That injury occurred at the end of the first half of the team's first game with Carolina in Charlotte. The Saints had Bush field a punt with no time left in the half, rather than having him call a fair catch and try a free kick. There's no way Bush should have returned that punt.

Belichick was hired by the Pats in 2000....anyway, I'm hoping we don't make another mistake, we've made enough in the 10 years we've been back in the league.  I think we're due for some good fortune!!

Prisco Rants: What are the Browns thinking?

Did you & Freeman whip these articles up as you were walking out the door today?

Oops it's 4:50 I haven't written my column today!

Both severely lack substance.

My 4th grade daughter could have tossed out more facts & stats.

At least there was no Mangina reference!

Wasn't sucessful? I'll give you the 4-12 but raise you a 9-7 & 10-6.

The Browns have only seen those numbers twice since their return. The playoff season 2002 & 2007's 10-6.

So unless he screws up like Crennel with clock management & piss poor preperation, if I can see a 9-7 & a 10-6 in the first 3 years I'd be happy.

It's also going to come down to division performance Romeo was terrible vs the division.

This is really a stretch of a column.  I pretty much stopped reading when I saw the part about the coach needing to be imposing and that Mangini's chubby cheeks don't scare the players.

Not everybody that's good in the NFL gets up on the podium and bashes the reporters and badmouths his players during press conferences like Parcells.

A few examples:
Jimmy Johnson?  The guy does hair commercials.  Great coach.
Joe Gibbs?  Not intimidating
Dick Vermeil?  The guy CRIES on the podium.  Great coach.
Don Shula?  Not intimidating
Bill Walsh?  About as imposing as my wife's chihuahua, that's how imposing.   Best coach I've ever seen.
Marv Levy?  Not intimidating.
John Madden?  Chubby cheeks.  Great coach.

NFL coaches make their money by outsmarting the competition, not by dressing up in Raider black and wearing spikes on their shoulders to scare the players.

In the end, I don't like the signing either, but I really don't agree with the logic.

Prisco Rants: What are the Browns thinking?

As a lifelong Browns fan of over 40 years i am getting tired of all the Rebuilding and Bad Choices , It is a good thing that Lerner has Deep Pockets , but then again it was on his dads plane that the move was Sealed . This is not what we fought for in 96 .

I'm so tired of this whole process of reto0ling and trying a new coach, a new system, and everything else...

perhaps, he did poor blitzing and a bad offense because his coordinators were morons. i think the browns had a great signing here, and i think mangini will learn alot from his time with the jets, and will be a one hell of a coach. im happy he landed on his feet, and i wish him good luck. if the jets hire brian schottenheimer, have fun, its gonna be a long boring 09.

He had Chad Pennington for the 2 years prior to this & couldn't do anything either - I am a long-suffering Jets fan & I (as well as many other fans) blame Man-wenie for the late season collapse. Farve was also a factor but poor coaching was the MAIN factor.

If you are a Browns fan, I feel bad for you - wait until your team < playing the 3-4,  only rushes 3  guys (zero blitzing). Do you think Matt Cassel, Seneca Wallace, etc.... passed for 300-400 yards against the Jets because they are great QB's? They had so much time to pass that they couldn't help but NOT pass for huge yardage. Case in point: Kris Jenkins was a huge factor in the first 10 games but he got tired from having double & triple teaming against him due to the lack of blitzing. I can go on forever but you get my point.

Wake up !   The reason  Mangini failed is the fact that he had Favre shoved down his throat.

You guys just don't get it.  Cowher is their head coach (in 2010).  He basically told Lerner "can you wait one more year?"

If Lerner gets burned by Mangini, no sweat...he is in position to let him go and hire Cowher next year.  On the other hand, if Manginin succeeds like Belichick did at his second head coaching job, then the Browns made the right choice.

Tell me, Prisco and Freeman, what did you say back in 1995 when the Patriots hired Bill Belichick after he failed to win with the Browns, cut their star QB in Kosar and made enemies with all of the local media people?  I'll bet you chastized the Pats for taking a chance on this guy.  How wrong would you have been?!?!
