Eagles line is brutish

Don't mess with the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line.

It is nasty.

By trading for left tackle Jason Peters Friday -- the deal is pending a new contract and Peters passing a physical -- the Eagles might now be able to stake a claim as having the best line in the NFL, complete with brawlers and maulers.

With Peters in at left tackle, the Eagles can keep Todd Herremans at left guard. The right side will be made up of the Andrews brothers, Shawn at guard and Stacy at tackle, and the center is Jamaal Jackson. From tackle-to-tackle, the line will average 331 pounds. That will wear down a defense for four quarters.

Peters didn't play that well last season for the Buffalo Bills after missing training camp in a contract holdout. But he's always been one of the tackles I've liked watch play. He is nasty. When he came out of Arkansas as a tight end, I listed him as one of my annual "Better-than" players that year, players who I liked more than the scouts.

In that column I mentioned that I thought Peters could be a really good tackle. You can look it up.

I like this move by the Eagles, just like I liked the move to sign Stacy Andrews as a free agent from the Bengals. The Eagles line is now big, powerful and physical.

It is also young.

When the season starts, Jackson will be the oldest at 29. Stacy Andrews will be 28, Peters 27, Shawn Andrews and Heremans each 26.

I'll take that group right now over any other in the league for age, nastiness and talent.

Getting Peters is a great move for the Eagles. The price of a three picks. including the No. 28 pick in the first round of next week's draft, and a new contract is steep. But if Peters plays like he did a few years ago, this will be well worth it.

NYG3, stating that the Giants will "run for more yards, and give up less sacks" than the Eagles is not exactly a bold prediction. The Giants pound the hell out of the football on the ground, and the Eagles are pass happy. So, you are comparing apples to oranges.

Given the fact that Andy Reid's #1 priority.. this year, and in the past, is to have a rock solid OL, I will give him the benefit of the doubt on trading for Jason Peters, and letting Tre Thomas walk away. Not to mention, Reid is NOT one to give away first round picks for someone he doesnt have the utmost confidence in them being an assett.

Gotta disagree with you, mljeff. We made it to the NFC championship game without a top WR, but that is why we LOST that game. Kevin Curtis, Desuan Jackson, Jason Avant, etc.. are nice WR's. But, they would all be better with a go-to guy like Anquan Boldin in the mix. Remember what Reggie Brown, LJ Smith and the other guys like him did while Terrell Owens was lined up on the other side ? How good would the offense look with Boldin on one side, Jackson on the other, and Kevin Curtin in the slot ??? Unstoppable, that's how it would look.

It would look even better with Tony Gonzalez at TE, but the Eagles are evidently committed to the future, when the future is NOW. Are you gonna tell me we wouldnt have done better than Atlanta's offer for Gonzalez ?? Frustrating.......

Carlf5, can we stop living in the past ? The 6 sacks by one guy and the gazillion overall were due to the Eagles Left Tackle being out that game. What have your guys done against us since, aside from losing a playoff game ?? You could have 5 Michael Strahans and it wouldnt matter.

you're dead wrong. that group isn't even the best OL in their division. that honor belongs to the New york Giants. smart, instinctive veterans who have played with each other for years. I guarantee that the G-Men will run for more yards and give up fewer sacks than the Eagles. looking good on paper doesn't make you the best

Osi had 6 sacks against the Eagles with an overrated offensive lineman out of the U who hasn't played significant minutes since then.  If he has half of that total in the two, maybe three, games this season I'll be surprised.

We had alot of picks to use, we still have 10 picks, including another 1st rounder, in this draft.

Why is Prisco always so defensive like "Oh I wrote it, look it up." I think he knows that everyone thinks he's a moron.

Hey man can we set up a time and date so I can get some of what you are smoking? That stuff must be good for you to think that any team in the beast has "easy pickins" . Not to mention with Plax gone your offense is officially below average.
