Eagles line is brutish

Don't mess with the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line.

It is nasty.

By trading for left tackle Jason Peters Friday -- the deal is pending a new contract and Peters passing a physical -- the Eagles might now be able to stake a claim as having the best line in the NFL, complete with brawlers and maulers.

With Peters in at left tackle, the Eagles can keep Todd Herremans at left guard. The right side will be made up of the Andrews brothers, Shawn at guard and Stacy at tackle, and the center is Jamaal Jackson. From tackle-to-tackle, the line will average 331 pounds. That will wear down a defense for four quarters.

Peters didn't play that well last season for the Buffalo Bills after missing training camp in a contract holdout. But he's always been one of the tackles I've liked watch play. He is nasty. When he came out of Arkansas as a tight end, I listed him as one of my annual "Better-than" players that year, players who I liked more than the scouts.

In that column I mentioned that I thought Peters could be a really good tackle. You can look it up.

I like this move by the Eagles, just like I liked the move to sign Stacy Andrews as a free agent from the Bengals. The Eagles line is now big, powerful and physical.

It is also young.

When the season starts, Jackson will be the oldest at 29. Stacy Andrews will be 28, Peters 27, Shawn Andrews and Heremans each 26.

I'll take that group right now over any other in the league for age, nastiness and talent.

Getting Peters is a great move for the Eagles. The price of a three picks. including the No. 28 pick in the first round of next week's draft, and a new contract is steep. But if Peters plays like he did a few years ago, this will be well worth it.

Eagles line is brutish

I am sorry, but are you kidding me?  You think a WR has been holding us back, or a lack of one?  Lets recap....the year after we went to the SB, when TO was still here for part of it, McNabb injured.....2006, McNabb injured.....2007, McNabb comes back after 9 months on an injury that the doctors said should take 12 to 15 months, and is slow and rusty....basically, he was working himself back for the next season....and in 2008, with McNabb finally healthy, we have the 2nd most amount of receiving yards in the NFC, and our offense is ranked 4h in the NFL.  And that was without our #1 WR for most of the year (Kevin Curtis, who had 1100 yards receiving his first year with McNabb).

No, what held us back was our injured QB.  Now, the team that HAS to get a WR to succeed?  The Giants.  Because their QB just isn't that good.  He proved that he cannot carry a team without a superstar lining up wide.  Not even with that awesome running game you have.

You guys should be the favorites, based on the last 2 seasons, however, without Plax, and with a rebuilt Oline in Philly and a rebuilt McNabb, and an improved passing attack by the Eagles (ecause Celek is just better than Smith, and we needed a TE for the last 3 years), it just isn't that big of a difference, as the Birds proved by beating your sorry team twice when it mattered most.

So what exactly does having a better o-line mean to the Eagles?...Mcnabb will have a few more seconds to throw before he inevitably tosses it into the dirt? you need a good qb, and a rb that can stay healthy for an o-line to mean anything; the Eagles have neither.

what a contest the nfc east trenches are shaping up to be... as a giant fan, i'm extremely pleased the giants went out and signed canty and bernard because they're going to need them. Dallas and philly are now both built to be mauling teams... although, it remains to be seen if philly will capitalize on this size and run the ball more... something i doubt they'll do. regardless, the wars will be won in the trenches this year and the healthier team will probably remain at the end. go big blue.

Easy pickins? Please. The Giants are finished. Their offense SUCKS without Plax, they should of brought him back. He was Eli's security blanky haha. He's lost without Plax. And why the hell are Giants fans wetting themselves over the possibility of acquiring Braylon Edwards? If he is so great then why are the Browns trying to trade him? God, Giants fans are doubtless the biggest morons in the country.

When you have a more than ten picks, including two one's, you can afford to move them for players. Especially the most important position in football for a player who doesn't touch the ball. And last time i watched them play, it was the Eagles d-line that dictated the outcome of the game against the Giants. Take Braylon in New York and see how drops get accepted by the Post media, or overpay for Boldin and see how important Fitz is.

And Giants have the best and deepest DL in the league, including getting back the guy who sacked McNabb 6 times in one game

Yeah, against a scrub O-lineman jackass... Giants suck!

I hope this line can do better in the red zone for rushing scores. And yes, I agree the Giants weren't at full strength last season, but they weren't a bad unit either without injured Umenyiora and retired Strahan. Take away Plaxico Burress on offense and the Eagles beat them and avenge the prior season's losses.

He made the Pro Bowl by default, he was an alternate last year, and was not deserving by any means.  He cost the Bills more than a field of penalty yards.
