Eagles line is brutish

Don't mess with the Philadelphia Eagles offensive line.

It is nasty.

By trading for left tackle Jason Peters Friday -- the deal is pending a new contract and Peters passing a physical -- the Eagles might now be able to stake a claim as having the best line in the NFL, complete with brawlers and maulers.

With Peters in at left tackle, the Eagles can keep Todd Herremans at left guard. The right side will be made up of the Andrews brothers, Shawn at guard and Stacy at tackle, and the center is Jamaal Jackson. From tackle-to-tackle, the line will average 331 pounds. That will wear down a defense for four quarters.

Peters didn't play that well last season for the Buffalo Bills after missing training camp in a contract holdout. But he's always been one of the tackles I've liked watch play. He is nasty. When he came out of Arkansas as a tight end, I listed him as one of my annual "Better-than" players that year, players who I liked more than the scouts.

In that column I mentioned that I thought Peters could be a really good tackle. You can look it up.

I like this move by the Eagles, just like I liked the move to sign Stacy Andrews as a free agent from the Bengals. The Eagles line is now big, powerful and physical.

It is also young.

When the season starts, Jackson will be the oldest at 29. Stacy Andrews will be 28, Peters 27, Shawn Andrews and Heremans each 26.

I'll take that group right now over any other in the league for age, nastiness and talent.

Getting Peters is a great move for the Eagles. The price of a three picks. including the No. 28 pick in the first round of next week's draft, and a new contract is steep. But if Peters plays like he did a few years ago, this will be well worth it.

Good Riddance!!!

Prisco you might have liked him, but as a Bills fan, I am glad to see him go.  You all thought TO would be a disturbance, take a look at this guy.  He was selected to the Pro Bowl by default just like Ruben Brown was for years.  Hey Eagles fans, he isn't a bad tackle, just hope he can remember the snap count from the huddle to the line of scrimmage.  I don't think there was a single person on any line that was flagged more for a false start, plus a boat load of holding calls.  He isn't worth close to what he is asking, so when the Eagles do sign him for whatever, be prepared, it will this same saga, year after year.

Nice try dude, that happened against a third-string left tackle (Winston Justice) when Tra Thomas was out with an injury.  Justice had virtually no experience at that point, and he was going up against an All-Pro end in Umenyiora.  If that had been Tra Thomas, Osi would have had one, MAYBE two sacks.  Keep resting on your laurels from two years ago, while we take care of the future.

carlf5,

And Giants have the best and deepest DL in the league, including getting back the guy who sacked McNabb 6 times in one game

That may be true, but the OT that was blocking..............or not blocking to be correct...............Osi Umenyora was Winston Justice.  He won't see the field unless Jason Peters is injured so expect a far different result.  Or maybe not.  One thing to note with Peters - according to NFL.com he surrended 11.5 sacks in just 13 games.  That was tied for the worst in the league amongst left tackles.

The big question I have is whether or not the Eagles offensive philosophy will change.  The line they have is built for a power running game.  The Eagles don't play that style and they don't have running backs that suit that type of game.  Westbrook is a great back, but he isn't suited to a power running game.

right...just like last year when they had 0 sacks in two games against that line without shawn andrews.  But I do like your optimism, if not wishful thinking.

I like what I'm seeing here. The Eagles big flaw last year was clearly getting the short tough yards. Well, they've re-built their o-line and added FB Weaver from Seattle who is a superb blocker and a good runner and catcher. I think they should still get Pettigrew in the first. He as well is a big beefy blocker but can also be dangerous in the pass game. With all those additions, I don't think the Eagles need to go out and get that "#1" receiver. Jackson, Avant, Curtis and they still have (I think) Baskett and Reggie Brown. The way Mcnabb spreads the ball around, I think that's all they're gonna need to at least be good enough to make another Super Bowl and maybe finally win one

Nah the Eagles line will walk all over the Giant's defense this season. With the 20th pick they will pick a reciever and your corners will be dealing with someone like Derrius Heyward-Bey, or Percy Harvin. Big play guys matched with DeSean Jackson, Kevin Curtis, and maybe even Reggie Brown at reciever with Westbrook in the backfield, a new short yardage back in Leonard Weaver, and an already solid Brent Celek, and Matt Schobel at tight end. The Eagles still have 10 draft picks in April. They can take a reciever first round, a running back in the 2nd, a tight end in the third. Then fill out depth through out the rest of the draft. The Eagles are showing aggressivness this season for a reason. They are sick of always going all the way to the championship game just to lose. They are pushing for a Super Bowl. NFC East champs this season.

Iggles line is certainly better, but NOT the best in the league.  That title still belongs to the Giants O-line - without question.  Also, Iggles line still won't be able to stop J Tuck, Osi, Kiwi, Canty, Bernard, etc, etc.  They're gonna knock some dick loose!

Eagles line is brutish

Is this article about the eagles or you being right? The line seems blurred as to if you are talking football or how great you think you are....
