Cassel getting paid

I guess the Kansas City Chiefs liked what they saw from Matt Cassel the past two months.

After privately hinting they might not give Cassel a contract extension after trading for him from New England, the Chiefs have reportedly given him a six-year deal that is expected to average in the $10-million range, probably similar to what Jacksonville gave Davis Garrard last year.

When the Jaguars paid Garrard, I cautioned about paying a potentiial one-hit wonder. After he struggled last season, there is some debate as to whether the Jaguars made the right move.

The same theory applies here. Cassel had one good year and now he's getting big money? Why not make him play a year under the franchise tag and then see if he's worth it? What's the rush?

Then again, if you trade for him you must think he's the guy.

We'll see.

I would have waited.

Cassel getting paid

Quarterbacks don't get paid for who they are.

They get paid for what they can become.

Mark Sanchez, Matt Stafford, JaMarcus Russell and other high profile QBs receive big money in hopes that they can develop into franchise passers.

Matt Cassel is no exception.

Obviously Pioli has seen enough in Cassel to designate him as "the guy." He may not be a finished product, but the Chiefs seem to believe he has the tools to become that guy.

This contract publically affirms what Kansas City management feels about their quarterback.

Matt Cassel is their guy, and they want everybody to know about it.

Prisco's right - why sign a guy based on one year of work to a six year contract? That's a huge investment to make in a guy that frankly nobody should yet be investing that much money into. Heck, the guy hasn't even played a down of real football for the Chiefs yet. For Cassel's sake I hope he can perform halfway decent this year, or he's going to be raked through the coals early and oftern.

No Way

Now they can focus on rebuilding.  Obviously they've got their franchise QB.  They wouldn't have brought him had the office brass not moved from NE first.  In my mind, they were sold on him from the get go and this way they get to play the wait game.

Now, they can dump LJ or whatever else it is they want to do with the rebuilding of a once powerful franchise.  They probably need to go back to Bama and grab another LB or something.

For once I actually agree with Prisco! I think Cassel is good, but not that good. He is a product of the NE system in my opinion. I wasn't that impressed by what I saw last year. Not having Gonzalez is going to hurt the Chiefs too. Oh yeah, Davis Garrard? Doesn't Prisco read what he writes before he posts??

Waited for what????????????? We have to go by this new regime anyway. Either they will fail or head in the right direction. If they want Cassel, let them have him and move on with this team. if it fails then the whole thing fails and these guys will be outta here. And don't get me wrong I want to see the Chiefs be a contender again. I'm just saying we have to live or die by Piolli and Haley so hopefully they get the Chiefs back on track along with Cassel.

Cassel getting paid

Well I'm with Prisco, I think the Chiefs should have waited to see if Cassel could prove himself on a team other than the Patriots.. I think my grandma could have won 11 games as QB for the Patriots last year... Remember the year before with virtually the same roster (except the QB position) they went 16-0 and Brady threw for 50 TD's?? When you remember that fact, it seems that Cassel isn't that great, and he'll probably be another Bono or Grbac - Those two were a couple of guys from a great system (49ers) who filled in for injured veteran stars and did pretty good, and they came to Kansas City and were terrible. yes Grbac put up some decent stats, but he was a locker room cancer.. I don't see Cassel as a locker room cancer, I just don't think he's going to be the next coming of Len Dawson.

You would have waited?  For what?  The Chiefs are in rebuilding mode.  They found a QB they obviously think they can build around and eventually win with.  What sense would it make for them to rebuild for a year or two, and then get setback again while waiting for a new QB to learn the system?

This was the right move.  They went after their guy, got him, and now signed him.  Although Cassel will probably never join the ranks of the elite QBs in the NFL, Pioli and Haley obviously saw enough of this guy to believe that he can be a winner when all the pieces fall into place.

Watch for this team to be one of the hottest to finish the 09 season heading into 2010.  I think the future is bright in Kansas City a few years down the road.
