Roddy White a rich man

The Atlanta Falcons insisted they wouldn't pay Roddy White the $10 million a year Larry Fitzgerald makes.

They didn't, but they came close.

White, who ended his camp holdout by agreeing to a six-year contract extension Saturday, will make $8.5 million per year. The Falcons were offering $7.5, he wanted $10, so they made a compromise.

That's smart business for both.

The Falcons were willing to play on without him, and White had to know. I told an Atlanta radio station Friday morning they would agree on a deal that averaged $8.5 million. It made sense.

I didn't think it would happen this fast, but that's a heck of a contract for a player with just two good years.
White is a rising player, so it made sense for the Falcons.

Everybody is happy.

That's how good negotiations end.

Listen. Roddy White isn't worth 8.5 and neither is almost any NFL wide reciever.  That position doesn't win superbowls or help get you there. The oline does. The dline does.  QB's do. special teams, running backs, but not wide receivers.  I'm a fan of a pretty lousy team that embarrasses themselves paying big money to receivers, the lions. Calvin Johnson is a MONSTER... look at last years stats on a team with no line, no running game, and absolutely had NOBODY ELSE AT WIDEOUT.. he was double teamed every single game almost all of the time.. yet look at his stats.... he's amazing ... but oh,, WE DIDN'T WIN EVEN ONE GAME !!!!!

This is neither here nor there but the Ravens in fact were ranked 18th overall in O last year. They had stellar rushing (4th in the league) and a rookie QB to boot. Not many teams can claim that with a rookie at the helm. The old rule of thumb is why throw the ball when they can't stop the run, thus resulting in Flacco throwing only 5 picks in the last 10 games. With McClain in the backfield the Ravens are truely missing nothing with the loss of Lorenzo. The line is healthy, have a year under their belt and have even stepped up with the addition of Oher. All signs to Flacco having a superb season. Also I wish luck to Matt Stafford. He looks to have his hands full this season but the lions can only go UP!

dont know why they didnt try and trade him for someone like Boldin, and pay Boldin a more accomplished WR the money.  Instead of shelling out 50 mil for a possible 1 yr wonder.  (Remember the Peerless Price fiasco

Yes, pay Boldin that money....so he can get hurt like he often does and waste it.  I think you mean 2 year wonder also.  You might need to get educated on some facts before you preach to class.

You know, you don't pay guys for what they did, you pay them for what they will do.  If that's the case, Tory Holt would ge getting 10 mil.  The Falcons predict that White will be a very good player, he has a short but impressive resume to back it up, so they showed him the money.  White got a lot, but the entire mindset of lots of the criticism here is just wrong.  If it takes big money to lock up promising young players then that's what you do; it's how you build for the future.

This is good for both parties.  Roddy gets paid and the Falcons get a young acending player with a contract that won't hurt them at all.  In a couple of years the contract will look like a great one.

RODDY WHITE A RICH MAN

I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW THE BREAKDOWN OF THE CONTRACT, IF IT CONSISTS OF A LOT OF INCENTIVES I LIKE IT, BUT IF NOT, I AM AFRAID THAT HE WILL LOSE SOME OF HIS DESIRE. THERE IS A REMARKABLE DIFFERENCE IN THE PERFORMANCE OF A PLAYER WHEN HE IS IN A CONTRACT YEAR TO WHEN HE ALREADY HAS THE BIG CONTRACT. THE TEST OF A GREAT PLAYER IS  WHEN THEY ACHIEVE ONCE GIVEN THE BIG CONTRACT- ONLY TIME WE TELL.

For some reason, I don't think he's going to hit a sophomore slump like I believe Flacco is going A million players look smoking in camp and preseason. Joe Flacco's success depends on the success of the Ravens run game and losing Lorenzo is a huge difference as Flacco fumbled 11 times last year and now he loses the best blocking FB possibly (HOFer for sure). Flacco was sacked 33 times to Matt Ryan's 17. Atlanta gave Ryan a great short option in Tony Gonzalez (most prolific TE in history), what did the Ravens truly do besides get Mason out of retirement, and if that's your best move, it is not good. Drafting Oher was smart by Baltimore but I have to agree that Flacco is more likely to hit a bump. Just remember, his record is all that matters but when comparing the two players at the end of their careers but my hometown joke of a team the Lions ranked 9th in Pass Yds (219), 22nd in Rush, 15th Overall (101). Ravens- 28th in pass (160), 30th in rush (79), 32nd..aka dead last in total. If Ed Reed and that D didn't score so much, they would have been in big trouble last year. I, am skeptical of Flacco, but this year will tell. I wish him luck.

Roddy White had some great things to use for bargaining with Falcons management.  I agree to everyone who has said, "Oh two good years and he wants to be paid like the best". The first couple years, he can just point to his QBs and the fact that he was the #3 WR and 5th option his first two years, add option #1- Vick Takes off and #2 throws where he can to Crumpler.

From the Falcons perspective, you are starting to win back a fan base and reputation that was tarnished and this kid formed an offensive triumvirate of Turner, himself and Matt Ryan that is now locked up and scary and led them to the playoffs in their first year together.

He was never going to get his 10 Million but you knew that they would sign him. If they want to win, unfortunately, they can't afford not to pay him.
